BOSTON (AP) -- The campaign headquarters of Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney was burglarized over the weekend and a television and computers stolen.

A campaign spokesman for the former Massachusetts governor described the crime as "a routine burglary" and did not believe it was politically motivated.

"Several laptops and a TV were stolen," said campaign spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom. "All the computers are password-enabled and the hard drives are encrypted. The only thing they're good for is parts."

The Boston Police Department was called to the scene, an office building overlooking Boston Harbor in the city's North End, but a report was not immediately available, said Officer Eddy Chrispin.

The incident is the third of its kind recently involving a presidential contender.

Such political burglaries are commonplace in Massghanistan. If my memory is accurate, one of John F-ing Kerry’s ranking staff members was caught burglarizing and trying to bug another campaign headquarters.

They must have stolen a couple of percentage points while they were at it. Maybe the police can recover them...

Don’t be too confident. The CIA will crack those hard drives and turn the information right over to the DNC.

I mean, that’s what they think they’re job is, right?

Isn't there a story like this every election cycle?

"the hard drives are encrypted"

Maybe we should put Mitt's campaign staff in charge of security at Los Alamos.

Yep, they contained all sorts of top secret info, such as what position Romney was taking next week on key issues.

This campaign spokesperson is misinformed. You can get software on the internet that will break standard encryption packages and break into computers with passwords. Corporations use these resources to recover computers whose users have either forgotten the passwords or who have left the company. The companies who supply the “keys” sell their services “by the drink”.

I doubt that they vet their clients. Even if they did, they probably readily sell their services to the DNC. Why not?

Is Tony “The Thug” Pellicano out of jail already? I guess he must be, or do the Klinton’s still have Craig Livingston on retainer ???

Feh! I’ll admit I’m not a Romney fan, but, like all the candidates, he’ll make speeches tomorrow on the anniversary of 9/11 vowing to keep America safe. Yet he can’t even keep his office safe?

A campaign spokesman for the former Massachusetts governor described the crime as "a routine burglary" and did not believe it was politically motivated.

How can anyone actually know that so soon after the crime?

And since when are burglaries "routine"?

The Republicans either need to get more articulate spokesmen who can speak with clarity, or less "politically correct" ones.

Just saying...

Are these people so stupid as to not have security for their offices? Have they not heard of removable hard drives?

It was his brother, Cameron Kerry.

Surprised they don't put Lojack (sp?) on campaign laptops. They have to realize that theft by opposition, either republican or democrat is a possibility. And thus they could recover it and pinpoint exactly who took it.

Could be a devastating blow to a campaign to be caught burglarizing an opponent.
