Last month Pajamas Media published an in-depth report on the scandal surrounding the Baghdad Diarist articles by Scott Thomas Beauchamp in The New Republic.
Now PJMs Bob Owens interviews Major John Cross, who led the U.S. Armys investigation into Private Beauchamps shocking claims. Even more shocking is what Cross reveals below: Among other findings, there is no credible evidence that TNR made any attempt at fact checking prior to publishing the articles. Furthermore, not one of the soldiers interviewed under oath in the investigation corroborated Beauchamps story.

The “gig” may be up, but the lies are now embedded in the readers’ minds and that’s what the object was............
It's like 1998 at The New Republic all over again. Well, except for no one has been fired yet.
"Never mind"
“”It’s like 1998 at The New Republic all over again. Well, except for no one has been fired yet.””
I subscribed to TNR at that time( along with the Nation, In These Times, The Progressive, Spy, NYT etc).
His articles were so clearly false that within the first paragraph It would start you laughing.
I used to wave his articles around all the time pointing out how they were clearly fiction, not biased, fiction.
I started looking forward to his entertaining stories yet his editors could see nothing wrong.
I’m surprised the Army is so lenient with Beauchamp. I wouldn’t want him in my unit if I were a soldier.
Soldiers often fib or lie to outsiders. It's hard to be too harsh on this young man -- if his battalion commander and other leaders still want him around, they're the best judges.
The real stink should come to rest on The New Republic -- there's really no excuse for their bogus attempts to undermine faith in our military while we're at war.
