Americans Feel Military Is Best at Ending the War
New York Times ^ | Sep 10, 2007 | By STEVEN LEE MYERS and MEGAN THEE

Americans trust military commanders far more than the Bush administration or Congress to bring the war in Iraq to a successful end, and while most favor a withdrawal of American troops beginning next year, they suggested they were open to doing so at a measured pace, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll.

On the eve of what is sure to be a contentious debate on Iraq, the results underscored the benefits to the White House of entrusting the top American commander in Iraq, Gen. David H. Petraeus, to make the case that an increase in American forces this year had been successful enough to continue into next year.

Today, General Petraeus will appear on Capitol Hill along with the American ambassador to Iraq, Ryan C. Crocker, in what has become the most anticipated testimony from a military commander in decades.

The poll found that both Congress, whose approval rating now stands at its lowest level since Democrats took control from the Republicans last year, and Mr. Bush enter the debate with little public confidence in their ability to deal with Iraq. Only 5 percent of Americans — a strikingly low number for a sitting president’s handling of such a dominant issue — said they most trusted the Bush administration to resolve the war, the poll found. Asked to choose among the administration, Congress and military commanders, 21 percent said they would most trust Congress and 68 percent expressed most trust in military commanders.

Bush has only himself to blame. If he had remained stridently out in front and embraced the military in a more gung ho fashion, people would identify him with the military effort and not with the political handling of the war.

The last president to tap into the average American's feelings during war was Richard M Nixon, and the democrats have scared the republicans into not repeating his successes.

I don’t know... he’s still a politician no matter what way one sees it.. I am actually glad the poll came out this way, I’d rather the military handle the war, at least before Congress.

I really wonder why the approval ratings suck so bad. Is it because they haven’t ended the war in Iraq or because they haven’t done anything at all since the Dims have taken over? I guess it depends on the spin you read and hear, but I think it’s a bit of the Dim not doing anything and trying to control the war effort TOO much.

If even the NY Times/CBS cannot massage the numbers to prop up the DNC’s propaganda line, the Democrats are in serious trouble over Iraq

We need to pray and pray hard this week for General Petraeus. What he’ll be up against this week will be worse than any ground battle he’s ever faced in his long, successful career.

Just a reminder:

Democrats UNANIMOUSLY voted to approve his appointment.

Democrats NEARLY unanimously voted to continue funding the war/surge.

Now, let’s just sit back and watch them slice and dice this guy, with the help of the MSM.

It angers me to no end how hamstrung our military has been. Grrrrrr!

I heard Schumer’s speech last week on the upocoming report and this morning I heard Rahm Emanuel attacking it as fiction. In my entire life, I have never heard of an officer in the military with such a distinguished career as General Petraeus being attacked so viciously by elected representatives in congress. The closest I can recall was Ollie North or Iran-Contra and he single handidly smacked the old wind bags down.

I think Americans were expecting a change. The voters of America are watching the “Bread and Circus” and not getting enough information.

Democrats took over in Jan with an approval rating around 50%. It is now down to 11%. During that time they did nothing but fight with Bush about Iraq.

Bush’s stood firm on Iraq. His approval rating, even with the dip during the Amnesty fight, is back to just under 40%.

What does that tell you about who is winning the argument about Iraq?

Everyone claims they’re better at ending our presence or completing the mission in Iraq so in about 15 months these armchair generals will get the opportunity to show their stuff.

Ha! I read this as a new attempt by the MSM to enter the newest phase of the Iraq war as "Americans don't trust Congress...but they don't trust Bush either!!

They're going to LOSE on the issue of withdrawal from Iraq immediately, so this is a new tact to try and discredit the administration.

Glad I don't pay for their "news".

Common sense rears its ugly head, even in a poll conducted by the New York Times. Who'd a-thunk it?

"War is too important to be left to the generals," said Georges Clemenceau, Premier of France during World War I. Whether that was true then, it is not true today. Especially with the sorry lot of national politicians, war is too important to be left to the politicians.

This poll shows that somehow -- and over the opposition of the MSM -- the people have gotten the message. Given a choice between believing Senator Kennedy and believing General Patreus, the people will believe the one who knows what he is doing and has put his life on the line. And that ain't the Senator from Chappaquiddick.

Could be that the Dems got their titties caught in the ringer on this one..........Americans trust the military assessment and the Dems & Move-on.org are nastily trying to discredit Gen. Petraeus.

You might want to read more than a couple of lines from the Poll that only justify your point of view.

The numbers are are at its highest levels ever - they want the US troops out of Iraq right away or within 2 years.

They think the war was a mistake from the beginning.

They prefer the Democratic party “over” the GOP in making the right decisions about the Iraq war. They might trust the Generals more than the Dem's but they don’t trust the GOP much at all.

You might want to ignore polls for they are slanted.

My view is quite simple, non-partisan and easy to follow: LET THE GENERALS RUN THE WAR!!!! Honestly I don’t care what poll numbers say about politicians and who Americans polled trust more to make decisions about the war JUST LET THE GENERALS RUN THE WAR!!

“You might want to ignore polls for they are slanted.”

I heard the same line from quite a few FReers this time last year that the GOP was going to win the general election because even though the polls said the Dem's were going to win they were all just slanted or made up polls so - don't worry.

It might be time for some to wake up, the majority of USA citizens are tired of the Iraq War and want out now. Bush waited way too late to change strategy in 2007, that is the #1 reason why the GOP lost in Nov 2006.

You might want to look at polling data other then ones that justify your emotion based political opinions. CBS.NY Times has a long history of over sampling Democrats by 5-9%. IF they are finding this result, what are more serious professional pollers finding?

Bush’s approval rating is up, the Democrats in Congress is at a record low. The ONLY thing Congress has done is fight with Bush over Iraq. MAYBE instead of putting your hands over your ears and screaming “no no no no” at everyone who has a different viewpoint then your own, you might actually try thinking about the data for once.
