Vietnam Memorial Wall Defaced This Weekend (September 7-9, 2007)
Eyewitnesses to the damage, Concretebob, Mr. and Mrs. Trooprally ^ | September 9, 2007

Posted on 09/09/2007 6:55:45 PM PDT by tgslTakoma

Mrs. Trooprally called me this evening to tell me that she and her husband, as well as Concretebob, saw damage along almost the entire length of the Vietnam Memorial Wall. They found this damage this morning, when they walked through the area before participating in the September 11th Freedom Walk.

Concretebob was told by a National Park Service employee that the damage was done on Friday night. There was no police report taken or written about the vandalism, apparently. And the damage was still very much there today.

Here are a few of the photos that Mrs. Trooprally took this morning...

This first one is not so noticeable, but as they walked into the center, it got worse.

It seems like a oil that has and acid in it; As you go up the Wall some the names can not be read!!!

It looks like the person who did this walked along The Wall with some type of container, perhaps hidden at their side so that they could squirt the oily substance without being caught in the act.

The names along the lower part of The Wall appear to have taken the brunt of the damage.

Because of the reflective nature of The Wall, Mrs. Trooprally had a tough time capturing the extent of the damage. Mr. Trooprally said that the oily substance has discolored the shiny stone, but that it has been absorbed into the more porous area where the names are etched into The Wall.

I think it is important to note that this unbeleivable foot-dragging is being done by the same Park Service that supports the Islamofacist-worshipping disgrace recently renamed “The Circle Of Embrace”. The original name, “Crescent Of Embrace”, overplayed the hand of the blame-America-first apologist handwringers that created it. It is the monument to the heroes of Flight 93.

Beyond shameful. Since I haven’t read each post, are there any numbers to call to express concern? Any news on planned cleanup? I’d think the sooner, the better.

The PS employee said that they couldn't tell the media because they did not know who did it.

Like that has stopped the media before...

Of Course the media would have blamed an angry mob of racist bigoted homophobic suicidal wheelchair bound Viet Nam veterans who were former rural southern postal workers in black trench coats and demanded that any one matching that description or any part of it be prevented from visiting the wall.

Especially if they drove a white van...

It is the monument to the heroes of Flight 93.

With that Crescent/Circle of Embrace design, it looks more like a monument to the hijackers.

The one thing that distinguishes these people is that they think their juvenile, immature behavior means something.

Hmmm. This doesn’t look like vandalism.

Ahhh... we hear from the real investigative expert now.

And your CSI credentials?

If you've seen this first-hand, you have a distinct advantage over the rest of us. It's hard to make out much in the photos. Not to criticize the photographer -- it's a tough subject unless you happen to have a portable studio on hand.

Before I go on, I want to clarify something: None of the scenarios I suggested was meant to be a "this is what happened" explanation. I's pure speculation, and if it seemed that I was claiming anything more than that, that was careless on my part. My point was that there are alternatives to the theory that has often been accepted without question in this thread.

Are the alternatives plausible? Not, to my eye, any less so than the theory that someone squirted oil at the base of the memorial in the middle of the night to make an anonymous "statement" that few people would see and no one would understand. And then addressing who did it and why just piles speculation upon speculation.

I have to ration my outrage these days. There are enough real, confirmed, documented outrages out there that if I got all het up over something that someone may or may not have done, I wouldn't have time for anything else.

But there is no grass there, and the sidewalk is approximately 8-10 feet wide; so nix that speculative pronouncement. As to a leaky edger dripping down from the grass above the wall... for that to happen, the edger would have to be hanging approximately 12-18" over the granite edge of the wall. Again, not too likely of an explanation.

True if you assume that the liquid is traveling straight down or horizontally. A fluid leaking under pressure that isn't level or plumb would be traveling in an arc.

I think Hillary, Kerry, Murtha, Pelosi, Schumer, Reid, Feinstein, and the rest of their Liberal anti-American, anti-military cohorts should be sent to clean up the Memorial. Let them put actions to their hypocritical words.

Reading your experience about the wall makes me think of mine. We have a Vietnam veteran’s park near my home. Thy have a moving wall display every year or so. It’s about 3/4 scale. I’ve had occasion to stop by while riding my bicycle to work at 6:30 am with fog settled low on the ground. After I left, I had to stop at a park bench and gather myself back up.

This year, I told one of the vets at the wall that I really hate when they bring it over cause it causes me to lose my composure every time. I’ve seen the moving wall and the real one. For some reason, the moving one is more emotional to me.

I truly hope that whoever did this is caught and very publicly made to pay for his actions...very publicly. Personally, I’d chain him to a lightpost near the memorial, fence him in (to keep him alive) and leave him there for about a week.

The Park Service said

The Park Service, or an employee on site or on the phone?

it happened Friday NIGHT. That’s a little late to be weedwacking.

When do the grounds crews work? I assume it's not in the middle of the day when the tourist crowds are at their peak. I've been to Washington several times, and I don't recall seeing grounds crews at work right at the monuments during the day -- I think it would have registered if part of the monument were closed due to lawnmowers.

At the very least, I'd expect them to work at the late part of dusk or the early part of dawn, or possibly even at night, because the area is brightly lit enough for it.

One more note is that unless someone saw the act committed, no one can say when it was done -- it can just be narrowed down by the first time it was discovered and the last time someone would definitely have noticed it.

If the oil dripped from above, I’d expect there to be drops higher on the Wall somewhere.

That would depend on the angle of both the fluid arc and the wall. The wall certainly looks vertical, but I've never taken a level to it, so I don't know if it's perfectly plumb, or it it's angled slightly for drainage or to make the names easier to read.

Thats a whole lot of drip.

I’d have to do possible but not probable.

You would figure some CSI type would have taken a swab by now and we would know what it was.

My experience with the Vietnam Memorial was the same as yours. I went there at 3 a.m., because I knew I could park nearby, and figured there would be few people there. There were a few people there -- some wearing well-worn Army jackets, and weeping quietly as they reached out to touch names on the wall.

I have been to many War Memorials, in many places. The only two which approach the power of the Vietnam Memorial are the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Iwo Jima Memorial. And in terms of personal feelings brought forth, the "Wall" is the most powerful.
