Oriental fruit flies have been found near the Los Angeles Harbor, prompting county crews to set traps to kill the pest.

The Los Angeles County Department of Agriculture found a fly Tuesday in Harbor City. Three additional flies were found there and in Rolling Hills later in the week.

County workers are preparing to spread insecticide-laden bait in the area. No spraying is planned, but sticky globs of poisoned bait will be stuck to power poles and high in trees.

The flies usually arrive in Southern California when contraband food, fruit or plants are brought in from Asia. The pest can infest more than 230 types of fruits and vegetables.

The pesticide will be brushed onto surfaces in Torrance, Harbor City, Carson, Wilmington, Lomita, Rolling Hills Estates and Rolling Hills, County spokesman Ken Pellman said.

Oriental Fruit Flies? That is so un-PC. They are to be called Asian Fruit Flies, until the PC police determine that Asian is also an insult.

Another little present from our Chinese friends? And how much is this going to cost to remediate?

Please...don’t call them Asian fruit flies. They’re George Takei flies.

It's too bad that this pesticide doesn't work on the gangbangers in those same cities.

Nuke those oriental fruit flies. Japanese beetles are bad enough, they eat my garden every summer.

What’s so odd about finding “fruit” flies in California?

We used to be plagued with them, and lawns in our area had big dead spots. I used to see ours torn up in the morning and one night found a big skunk rooting for grubs. Aha.

We used that lawn food with grub control, and have not seen a Japanese Beetle for three years. It was their larvae that was destroying lawns. Later when they grew up, there would go the veggies and flowers.

Fairly common at gay bars in San Francisco.
