ODESSA, Texas - Two police officers responding to a domestic disturbance were killed and a third was critically wounded by a gunman who led Texas authorities on an hours-long standoff, authorities said.
The suspected gunman in the shooting Saturday night, 58-year-old Larry White, will likely face two counts of capital murder and attempted murder of an officer, said Tela Mange, a Department of Public Safety spokeswoman.

Why is this POS still breathing air?
OH MY GOD! That`s where I was a deputy!!! :(
I didn`t see the name of the officers anywhere.. Anyone know if it was city or county?
Pray for the families!
Odessa Police Department Cpl. Arlie Jones and Cpl. John Scott Gardner were killed Saturday -- and Cpl. Abel Marquez was fighting for his life after being shot in the face. Jones had been with OPD for 23 years and was 48, his stepdaughter Shanna Foppiano, 32, said. He was very well respected and big in his church (Temple Baptist now CrossRoads Fellowship), she said. He was just a big kid at heart, and he loved everybody.
The man held OPD officers, Texas Department of Public Safety officers, ECISD police and Ector County sheriff's deputies at bay for more than four hours.Odessa American I didn`t know these officers, but it doesn`t make it any less tragic. May they rest in peace.
If they were able to call for backup before being shot why didn’t they wait for backup to arrive? Also, trying to enter a house by force immediatly after a domestic quarrell is not the most sound judgement IMOH.
PRayers offered for the family of this officer.
PRayers for the families, OMG, how terrible.
Death penalty, but quick.
Unfortunately, after this human offal gets convicted, he will wait 20 to 25 years as appeal after appeal is filed.
“If they were able to call for backup before being shot why didnt they wait for backup to arrive?”
Because they were doing their jobs.
It’s “serve and protect” and sometimes they have to protect without all the best equipment.
Would you rather they wait out side while the woman is getting beaten or killed because thy don’t have a bullet proof vest on?
Unfortunately, too many cops DO wait, which is why it’s best to be able to defend yourself. A colt in the hand is better than a cop on the phone (or whatever the saying is)
Wrong.
The article says the woman had already left the house after the officers arived.
Not here in Texas.
At least in Texas they will execute him quickly.
fella,
I’m glad Texas supports quick justice. When my cousin’s 8 year old daughter was raped and murdered, the killer confessed, said he’d do it again if he had the opportunity and then waited 22 years in a Tennessee prison before taking the dirt nap
I hope that they can take turns executing him.
Story says the woman was already outside.
Still most of the time the police will go in to try to talk to the guy, to see if they need to take him in, or if he's sufficiently calmed down (the usual case) that if the woman doesn't want to press charges, she can be safely left with him. (Or the other way around, women commit domestic violence too you know).
Given that they couldn't get in the front door, maybe waiting for backup before going in the back might have been judicious, but there were three of them, and unless they had reason to believe the wife beater was armed, (although in Texas that's a fair assumption in most any household) and such a hothead that he was likely to use his gun(s), they'd probably figure they could handle the situation and continue with "business as usual".
When my cousins 8 year old daughter was raped and murdered, the killer confessed, said hed do it again if he had the opportunity and then waited 22 years in a Tennessee prison before taking the dirt napOMG, how sad :( Well, now she is in heaven laughing at him down in hell... and I agree that justice should be served much more quickly than it currently is in most states.
