Test-drive a Nissan, win a lead-laced mug
Fri Sep 7, 2007 4:24PM EDT
TOKYO (Reuters) - Chinese merchandise took a fresh knock Friday when car maker Nissan said it was recalling tens of thousands of mugs it gave away in Japan because the paint contains excessive lead.
It said it took the action after a hapless car-shopper fell ill after drinking from one of the mugs and complained.
Nissan Motor said the cups, which it was giving to anyone who test-drove one of its cars in Japan during a sales initiative that started on August 16, had a lead content that was more than 30 percent above the permissible level.
Japan's third-biggest carmaker said it would recall the mugs, which it said could have reached as many as 87,000 potential customers. It did not know the identity of the manufacturer in China.
Chinese products have come under intense scrutiny over safety concerns in recent months, prompting recalls of products from toys and toothpaste to seafood and tires.

Here’s a question I have not seen asked before: Has Nissan or ANYONE ever demanded their money back for these inferior goods? Or is China untouchable,?

I'm sorry, but I have to call BS on the "hapless car-shopper who fell ill" due to just drinking from the mug. I imagine that "30% over the permissible level" of lead doesn't amount to squat, and it definitely isn't going to leach out in an amount that will make someone ill. Hell, people used to sweeten wine with lead back in the Middle Ages, and while it did lead to lead poisoning, it didn't make them ill when they drank it. My 2 cents.
Here we go again.
Wow! A whole mug for test driving a car. Nissan has really gone over the edge with this fabulous incentive! What next, a free scented pine tree shaped deoderizer?

yes, but the deoderizer causes cancer.
But, but, it's FREE.
Soon to be a chain email with many exclamation points in the subject.

That’s a good idea.

I bet half the junk at Walmart is covered in lead paint. I should go buy some kind of detection device and then go hire myself a Lawyer!
My thoughts also.
I should add that I didn't know that there was a "permissible" level of lead in drinking mugs.
