It is the kind of embarrassment that any school would want to avoid: an esteemed board member who has given generously of his time and money gets caught in a headline-grabbing scandal.
And in the case of the New School in Greenwich Village, it turned out to have some national resonance: Norman Hsu, a major Democratic donor active in Senator Hillary Rodham Clintons presidential campaign and a New School trustee, was found to be a fugitive who had skipped out after a felony theft conviction in California 15 years ago.
Compounding matters, he failed to show up for a court date. He was arrested on Thursday in Grand Junction, Colo., after having slipped away from the authorities in California on an Amtrak train. He is now hospitalized under federal custody.
How did someone like Mr. Hsu make his way to the New Schools board?
He was a mover and shaker who was recruited by Bob Kerrey, the universitys president and a former senator from Nebraska, one of several people associated with the school who are prominent in Democratic politics or political fund-raising circles. Until last week Mr. Kerrey had been one of the few people speaking out in Mr. Hsus defense, calling him a terrific member of the board who was being unfairly pilloried.

When has scandal stopped rodents ? This is about making their bones.
Take out the name New School and insert any Ivy League school.
This could make Kerry not run, if the story has any legs.
Yeah, but how are we going to keep this story alive and growing for a year?
perfect timing, wouldn’t you say ? Hagel says he’s not running, Kerrey wants back in the Senate, and Hsu leaves egg foo yong on Kerrey’s face.

Hsu's mentioned about a half dozen times. He's listed as a trustee, but most of the mentions are for gifts to the school.
I wonder if Kerrey will see that the school returns the money.
I don’t think Kerry is a serious opponent even if he does run. He hasn’t lived in the state since he left office. His ties to the state are weak at best.
Al Franken’s ties to the state of Minnesota are weak at best, as well.
The liberals are rallying around him despite that fact.
Maybe the good people of Nebraska aren’t as crazy as some Minnesotans.
Minnesota is a whole lot more red than Nebraska is, Cornhusker uniforms not withstanding. And Coleman is in more trouble than the GOP in Nebraska are.

And, of course, Bernard L. Bernard L. Schartz should be hung for treason.

Good info. Thanks!
Do you know if Omaha is still fairly conservative? I used to travel there quite a bit some years ago. I loved the place, especially the old town and the Henry Doorly Zoo.
Omaha is about as liberal as Nebraska gets. And that isn't much.
thanks, bfl
Bernie Schwartz is bought and paid for by the Chinese Communist Party, and Hsu is another operative of the Chinese.

The New School for Social Research continues the Graduate Faculty's tradition of synthesizing progressive American intellectual thought and critical European philosophy. True to its origin and its firm roots within the University in Exile, The New School for Social Research, particularly its Department of Philosophy, is one of very few in the United States to offer students thorough training in the modern continental European philosophical tradition known as "Continental philosophy." Thus, it stresses the teachings of Aristotle, Locke, Hume, Kant, Hegel, Kierkegaard, Marx, Nietzsche, Husserl, Heidegger, Freud, Benjamin, Wittgenstein, Foucault, Derrida, Deleuze, et al. [1] The thought of the Critical Theory of the Frankfurt School of Max Horkheimer, Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno, Herbert Marcuse, Jürgen Habermas, et al. holds an especially strong influence on all divisions of the school.
In other words, the primary mission of this school is to push the hard-left Critical Theory and other forms of Cultural Marxism. Wasn't Bob Kerrey supposed to be a 'moderate' Democrat?
