Thompson says cancer won't derail his candidacy

LE MARS, Iowa -- Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson said Friday that the lymphoma he was diagnosed with a few years ago is a chronic disease that could resurface, but that it's treatable and should have no bearing on his longevity, candidacy or ability to lead the nation.

"I've never been ill from it a day in my life," Thompson told a small group of reporters during a wide-ranging interview on his campaign bus from Sioux City to the farm town of Le Mars. "I wouldn't be thinking about doing this at all if I had any questions about it."

On Day Two of his campaign, Thompson also weighed in on President Bush, Iraq, abortion and gay rights. At the same time, he continued a low-key pace: three stops on Friday after two the day before.

What if the MSM decided to simply not cover Fred or did si in the briefest manner and in negative terms, to short circuit his campaign. That way, the only buzz he’d get he’d have to generate himself, and he’d have to win the debates decisively. Hard to imagine (no, it’s not), the press deliberately deciding not to cover a great story, the campaign of the next President, but that might be their strategery. Well, along with pumping up Hill and Obama and a republican they’d beat handily.

Yes, you are right. Rudy G has cancer of the prostate treated with radon seed implants.

You might also note that Senator McCain has been treated repeatedly for a malignant melanoma of the face.

Finally, please remember John Kerry had a total prostatectomy a short time before running for President. He, like all the Pubbie candidates thus far, refused to make all personal health records available to the press.

There is a squeamishness of the press and others about asking tough questions and demanding full answers—by data not by speeches—as to personal health.

Being able to physically able to do the job is further compounded by questions of psychological consequences of an ongoing, fatal illness. Wilson, FDR, JFK and, yes Reagan in his last term, all had severe disabilities which supposedly have now been dealt with by legislation. Better to assess the health care of candidates before they are elected than after! We all do get sick and die, this should not be the problem it is. There is a general reluctance to talk about one's own diseases and death--especially by those who hold high public office.

Having been raised by medical professionals (dad was a physiologist, mom a radiologist) I'm more than aware of the symptoms of non-hodgkins lymphoma. I also know that being a cancer survivor doesn't mean you can never develop cancer again...as a matter of fact the likelihood is greatly increased.

BTW...two of my grandparents were asymptomic, full of energy, yet died with a final diagnosis of cancer.

My point in my comments on the Rudi site were that Fred Thompson had said much as he did in this posted article, and there were all kinds of ‘experts’ on the thread who were going on and on about the seriousness of Fred’s cancer vs Rudi’s not being so serious to a presidential run. It kept him from running against Hillary! the first time for Senator of NY, and while Rudi may be cancer-free now, there is no guarantee that either man’s cancer won’t come back.

Yes, I agree, with the provisio that all the candidates should make their medical records open to the press and public—that includes Rudy.

Tsongas and Thompson had different kinds of cancer, but I realize that doesn’t matter to people who want to deceive others.

Gee thanks for the encouragment

Not trying to be discouraging at all...just honest and realistic. My Dad went thru colon cancer surgery, chemo and radiation therapy in 2000. He passed away three months ago due to cardiac problems post surgical sternal plating.

My point is that regardless of treatment there is always a chance of reoccurrence. The more time that passes the less likely of developing cancer again is the rule.

"...A relatively unknown yet deadly cancer has become more common in the last few decades and is now the sixth most common cancer in the United States, according to the National Cancer Institute. This cancer of the immune system, known as Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), became more familiar to the general public as it struck such luminaries as Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Senator Paul Tsongas, and the Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlevi of Iran.

With any illness, stress is a factor. But while I suffer from a life-long illness, I have the advantage of using the best tools at my disposal to manage my illness. For most people, illness is not a life-altering moment. We chose to not be defined by the name of the disease that ails us and we manage our health efficiently with the best doctors and treatments that medicine has to offer.

As of this date, we are still fortunate to live in a country with the best medical resources in the world. And I have no doubt that Thompson is on the ball when it comes to his health. He has so much to live for... not just serving his nation, but a wonderful family that loves him.

The US has a history of President's and VP's with health problems--many in recent decades. Lincoln, FDR, JFK, Cheney all come immediately to mind.

MSM are grasping at straws.
