ABC News' Christine Byun reports: Republican presidential candidate former Sen. Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., fleshed out his position on immigration reform while campaigning at a townhall meeting in Sioux City, Iowa Friday.
His loudest and most frequent applause came during a lengthy response to a question regarding the status of illegal immigrants living in the United States.
"If we catch illegal immigrants who are here, they need to be deported," Thompson said. "If they want to get back in the right way, get in line with everybody else."
He also called upon Mexico President Felipe Calderon to focus on building his economy.
"We love you, we want to be your friend, but we would ask you to examine your policies as to whether or not it's wise for your economy to be based on the exportation of your own people," he said.
Thompson's question and answer session was interrupted by his daughter, Hayden, who walked on stage when he was discussing "what had to be done" in the Middle East.
"Hello Sweetheart, I'll be finished in a minute," he smiled, as she clung to his left leg.

Two days in the race, and he is shutting down most of the gnats.
I predict we’ll here his thoughts on CFR in the next few days, and a proposal or principle for an alternative to the current law.

“We need this man to lead us out of the desert.”
Great timing for Thompson, especially since Rudy said illegals have broken no laws....or something to that effect.

"If they want to get back in the right way, get in line with everybody else." Fred dropped the ball here. If they're already deported from sneaking in illegally, they have no business "getting in line."

Getting in line is no guarantee of entry.. they can get in line all they want.. Thompson didn't say they could enter, only get in line.. which gee.. Get in line like everyone else seemed to be one of the talking points here on Free Republic and a part of all the anti-amnesty movements.. I wonder if we go back to your old posts on the subject how many times you've even said that?

"We love you, we want to be your friend, but we would ask you to examine your policies as to whether or not it's wise for your economy to be based on the exportation of your own people," he said. Well, I must say I like this bit of straight talk!

We dont want them here, whether legally or illegally. Period. When the American people understand that it is the quality of people that will determine whether we survive as a country or be driven to extinction, then and only then will our culture and country survive.
Nice try, troll.
