VIANA DO CASTELO, Portugal The mother of a British girl who disappeared four months ago in southern Portugal is to be named a formal suspect in the case Friday, a family spokesman said, a shocking twist to a case that has gripped much of Europe.
Kate McCann was questioned for almost 11 hours on Thursday, and is due back at a police station in Portimao, a town in Portugal's Algarve region, later Friday morning, family spokesman David Hughes told The Associated Press.

When asked about reports that Kate McCann would be named a suspect in her 4-year-old daughter's disappearance, (David) Hughes (family spokesman) said: "They told her last night that it would happen today. That's definite."
Hughes, the family spokesman, said the police have 22 questions that they want to ask Kate McCann, which require her to be made a formal suspect. Under Portuguese law, the legal move grants certain protections to the suspect, but allows police more latitude in questioning.
Don’t buy what? Please explain post and picture. Thanks.
I am highly skeptical of the Portuguese police.
Father to be made a formal suspect this afternoon.
Didn’t the McCanns have an audience with the pope, enlisting his help in finding the lost child? What kind of monsters could deceive the pope to conceal such a heinous crime? In my mind, they are either innocent or are devils in human flesh. Being a well wisher, I believe the former.
I, too, have always wondered about that story, and I am not surprised that the mother is now a suspect. But, of course, she may be innocent.
Thanks for replying. I haven’t followed this case and so have no real opinion on it yet. I am reserving judgement.
I will say this, though. Although I cannot imagine leaving my own kids alone while I go out to dinner, it seems to be the custom in Europe. I don’t think the parents did the right thing to leave them, but I don’t think they should be condemned for it, either. How many of us have ever used bad judgement or made a mistake that we managed to not get caught at or suffer the consequences of? (Think about glancing away while driving and then having to slam on the brakes to avoid rear-ending someone.)
Second, I have known several accomplished liars. It is stunning how some people can lie and yet look normal and respectable. Those I have known have done it successfully all their lives and have managed to deceive teachers, judges, neighbors, employers, etc. It is only those who get very, very close who can see through the respectable facade to the sham underneath. I don’t mean this as an accusation of the parents. I am just saying that it’s possible they are lying. Also, they are very good-looking and it’s been my experience that the good-looking among us are more readily believed than those who are not so good-looking.
Third, everyone has an agenda. The parents have theirs. The police have theirs. The journalists have theirs. Sometimes the different agendas support each other. Sometimes they are at odds. The motivation of all of these groups are suspect. The only ones on this list with a true motivation in favor of the child are the parents.
Next thing, she will be telling us that the Dingo at her baby.
I cannot believe the McCanns would ever have done anything intentionally.
Stupid for leaving the children, yes, but not criminal.
Note to self: stay away from places like Portugal and Aruba.

My parents would always use the intercom monitoring system, which should do the job. Why this couple didn’t use the hotel’s one, God only knows.

Rather judgmental of you when you don’t know all the facts. I would wait a good few months (and probably more) before damning the Portugese police.
Why is this news when there are other insignificant unsolved cases still making the news cycle?
This is a sad case. I'm reserving judgment, but there certainly is something fishy in all of this. Who in Hell leaves their kids alone in a hotel room to go to dinner?
That was a rather odd case. The Ozzie press crucified Lindy Chamberlain for "not showing grief" when it was obvious to me that she was the type who suffered such emotions in silence. It is very rare for a Dingo to attack a human, even a child, but not unheard of (we recently had a child nearly killed by a coyote here in New Jersey).
