Fred Thompson won the first-ever South Dakota Republican Party presidential straw poll at the South Dakota State.
More than 500 people voted in the straw poll, and the former Tennessee senator got 25 percent from a field of nine candidates.
Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani came in second with 19 percent, and U.S. Senator John McCain of Arizona was third with 14 percent.
The state GOP allowed anyone to vote in the straw poll if they would be at least 18 by the state primary election next June.
HURON Fred Thompson won the first-ever South Dakota Republican Party Presidential Straw Poll at the South Dakota State Fair Aug. 30 through Sept. 3, 2007. "Thompson bested the field of nine garnering 25 percent of the vote. He was followed by Rudy Giuliani who received 19 percent; John McCain received 14 percent, Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney each received 13 percent; Ron Paul received 8 percent; Duncan Hunter received 4 percent; Sam Brownback received 3 percent; and Tom Tancredo received 1 percent of the vote."
Similar to the way national polls are shaping up, it seems.
fast right out of the gate! go Fred!
I maintain nothing would increase the quality of political discussion on FR more than a macro that instantly deletes every story or reply containing the words “straw poll.”
This bodes well for the Thompson campaign.
It’s still a long way to November, but any positives that show up ANYWHERE for conservative candidates are good to hear. (You sure won’t hear ‘em on the MSM).
I had to laugh the other day, I believe [?] it was Rush who said as a Presidential candidate its imperative to be seen with the State Fair Butter Queen, but after elected...no more need for this 'monicker' or State Fair Butter Queen shot!
(loose interpretation)
Or web poll or call in poll.
It’s South Dakota for cryin’ out loud. Who cares?
Yep, this straw poll must REALLY mean something, Ron Paul didn’t win it. Blackbird.
Ping
They have a Senate election coming up in '08. Anything that drives conservatives to the polls is a good thing.
