Fred Thompson won the first-ever South Dakota Republican Party presidential straw poll at the South Dakota State.

More than 500 people voted in the straw poll, and the former Tennessee senator got 25 percent from a field of nine candidates.

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani came in second with 19 percent, and U.S. Senator John McCain of Arizona was third with 14 percent.

The state GOP allowed anyone to vote in the straw poll if they would be at least 18 by the state primary election next June.

I maintain nothing would increase the quality of political discussion on FR more than a macro that instantly deletes every story or reply containing the words “straw poll.”

This bodes well for the Thompson campaign.

It’s still a long way to November, but any positives that show up ANYWHERE for conservative candidates are good to hear. (You sure won’t hear ‘em on the MSM).

State Fair..

I had to laugh the other day, I believe [?] it was Rush who said as a Presidential candidate its imperative to be seen with the State Fair Butter Queen, but after elected...no more need for this 'monicker' or State Fair Butter Queen shot!

(loose interpretation)

They have a Senate election coming up in '08. Anything that drives conservatives to the polls is a good thing.
