Vice Chairman of Russia's State Duma Vladimir Zhirinovsky has urged the fast delivery of the magnificent S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems to Iran.

Speaking at the open session of Russia's State Duma on Wednesday, Zhirinovsky stated, "S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems should be delivered as soon as possible to enable Iran to defend its airspace."

However, the S-400 is designed to be more effective against stealthed aircraft such as the U.S. B-1 and B-2. And Russian officials claim it has twice the operational rang of the Patriot, currently generally regarded as the finest air defense system in the world against intermediate-range, though not intercontinental-range, ballistic missiles.
RIA Novosti said the S-400 air defense complex successfully passed its live firing tests on July 12-13 at the Kapustin Yar firing range in south Russia’s Astrakhan Region.
The Russian news agency said the S-400 system “has been designed to intercept and destroy airborne targets at a distance of up to 400 kilometers — 250 miles — or twice the range of the U.S. MIM-104 Patriot, and 2.5 times that of the (Russian) S-300PMU-2.”

They want a chance to really make it like Vietnam and field test all their weapons systems against our A team. Will GWB have the balls to tell them that will be considered an act of war?

Russia really wins with these deals. They get to make money while someone else actually tests their product. Reminds me of an old joke told after the first gulf war:

Iraqi General to Russian arms seller: "Do you have any surface to plane missiles we can launch at the Americans?"

Russian: "General, we have sold you our finest surface to air missiles."

Iraqi General: "Yes, thank you. We have successfully hit air. Now, we'd like to hit a plane. Do you have any surface to plane missiles??"

Thanks for the info.

Another question, why would a SLAM get through the new Russky super-duper air defense system if a land based missile can't?

Stalin helped train the Germans clandestinely. He thought that he could sit it out until the end. Putin appears to think likewise.

No. SLAM is no longer in use. But it was an air launched cruise missile based on the Harpoon airframe with a video feed seeker head.

SLAM = Standoff Land Attack Missile

The upgrade is the SLAM-ER. ER = Expanded Response.

Still only air launched.

LACMs (Land Attack Cruise Missile) from a US submarine would be a Tomahawk.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com they can see planes coming from miles away on radar.

they NEVER know where the subs are and they can launch from just off shore with little or NO warning before the first wave hits.
