``The nature of the disease is that it tends to relapse,'' said David Fisher, a lymphoma specialist and assistant professor of medicine at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. ``How long one can live with the disease varies considerably.'' ...
Thompson's cancer is an uncommon form called nodal marginal zone lymphoma, which accounts for 2 percent to 4 percent of all cases, according to Owen O'Connor, chief of the lymphoma service at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York and author of about 100 research papers on the disease....
``Because this is so rare -- there are about 1,500 cases per year in the U.S. -- it's hard to prognosticate,'' O'Connor said in an interview. ``Most of the statistics you see on the National Cancer Institute Web site are old data. It's very hard to reach broad generalizations.''
Thompson's doctor, Bruce Cheson, head of hematology and oncology at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, told CNN in April that his patient had no evidence of the disease after being treated and that many such patients ``can live a normal life span.''
``The indolent, or slow-growing lymphomas are very treatable, but rarely if ever curable,'' Cheson said in the April interview. ``Therefore, his likelihood of recurring is high, but this may not happen for a number of years.''
Cheson couldn't comment further because Thompson hasn't given permission for him to do so, Georgetown Medical School spokeswoman Marianne Worley said in a Sept. 4 interview. Thompson's campaign representatives didn't return phone calls seeking comment. ....
The textbook average life expectancy for all forms of non- Hodgkin's lymphoma is six to 12 years after diagnosis. Among patients diagnosed with Stage 1, or cancer that hasn't spread, the average 10-year survival rate is about 70 percent, Fisher said. For those diagnosed with extensive cancers, the 10-year survival rate is 36 percent. It is not known at what stage Thompson's cancer was diagnosed.
"DID YOU KNOW THAT FRED THOMPSON HAD CANCER? YES, LIFE-THREATENING CANCER! CANCER, I SAY!"
I stole that line from a blog, but I agree that Hugh seems to be going overboard here, probably since he's got so much love for Romney.
hugh hewitt is a largely worthless RINO shill.
bump
The 77 year old mother of a very good friend, has been cancer free of the exact same cancer, for 15 years (more than two Presidential terms)!
The question here is does Hugh Hewitt have knowledge of how long he will live, much less question the health of another?
It’s ok, Fred died from the cancer several weeks ago. Seeing as how that stopped the cancer from returning, it should not cause him any problems once he becomes President.
Hugh is so vested in Romney that he really is losing credibility. Sad to see....
Hugh has always said that in elections he will support the most conservative candidate who has a realistic shot at winning. His definition of “realistic” is directly related to how conservative the candidate is though. Thus he has never supported a truly conservative candidate because he apparently goes into all elections already believing that no truly conservative candidate is electable.
Hugh who?
Oh the RINO in L.A. who supported Tom McClintock for governor of CA in the 2003 recall until the “johnny-come-lately”, Ahnold jumped on the band wagon...that Hugh?
Yea, well that back stabber, Hugh, has about as much credibility as a screen door on a submarine.
Hugh picked his horse too early. Thompson is ten times better than Romney.
This year I went back in my posts to see what was so important, that I had to sign up at FR to post it.
My first post was a complaint about what a Pollyanish girl-man Hugh Hewitt is.
I always knew I was right about Hugh Hewitt. This confirms it. Hewitt’s a RINO loving SOB lowlife.
I didn’t know about Thompson’s cancer, but I have to say that when I first say photos of him I thought “wow, he doesn’t look real good” Perhaps he put off his announcement because of physical reasons?
Hugh Hewitt doesn’t have nearly the credibility he had a few years ago - largely because of nonsense like this.
Losing his credibility! Hewitt lost his credibility when he backed that famous leftcoast liberal RINO, Ahnold Schwarzy.
I say this even though Thompson is not my first choice. It's just that Romney is my LAST choice.
Fred has lost a significant amount of weight since June 1st when he began testing the waters. But its not from cancer. Fred`s been working out with a personal trainer to build up his stamina. I’d say that shows he’s a serious candidate.
Hugh Hewitt is a totally, 100% committed Mitt-worshipper.
That’s because the same man that wanted to stick us with Harriet Meiers on SCOTUS also wants to see RINO Rudy win the Republican nomination for President.
Its ok, Fred died from the cancer several weeks ago.”
If he had just had some fire in the belly, perhaps he would not have passed away....
