In a world of tuxedos, Berkshire County Republicans say they feel like a pair of brown leather shoes. But yesterday, a group of around 50 brown leather shoes met for the Berkshire County Republican Association picnic to discuss tradition, the open marketplace of ideas and the future.
The Grand Old Party group crowded Bucksteep Manor to listen to Jeff Beatty, foremost national security authority and 2008 candidate for U.S. Senate.
Beatty, who will challenge incumbent John F. Kerry, is a former Delta Force officer, FBI agent and CIA officer. With decades of experience in national service, Beatty told members he hopes to offer voters a change for the better.
"It's time to stop playing partisan politics," he said. "It's time to focus on the needs of our nation first. The two biggest challenges facing the United States today are the war on terror and border security to stem the flood of illegal immigrants."
In a county where saying Republicans are in the minority is like saying it gets cold in winter, former Pittsfield City Solicitor Samuel Landa said that it is important for the maintenance of the two-party system.
"I don't have blind loyalty," said Landa, who has been a member of both parties and now considers himself an independent. "I vote on the principles and the issues, and Democrats and Republicans should be able to discuss things."
As Beatty joked and conversed with those in attendance, he reminded them why he decided to enter politics two years ago.
"The reason I decided to get into politics is two sides of the coin," he said. "One is a frustration that I didn't think what needed to be done was getting done, and the other is a recognition that I am uniquely qualified.

Jeff Beatty sounds very impressive. And there is reason to beleive he can raise his profile.
Save your money, kids. While top-down worked in the South, we’re going to have to go the opposite approach in New England and other former GOP areas. Top-down has been an abject failure in the NE.

The real McCoy vs. Howdy Doody, I can’t wait.
Given Kerry’s high disapproval ratings, I don’t think this is as hopeless as one might think.
40% may not like Kerry, but for reasons we don’t know about. Part of the reason may be that he’s simply not left wing enough for the moonbats, but it doesn’t spell defeat. Beatty will be lucky to eke out 30% of the vote.
The state GOP can’t win any seats because there isn’t a state GOP, the apparatus is about as dead as they come. It only exists on paper. There just is no base of power. What few Republicans are left in the legislature play kissy-face with the rodentry for specks of crumbs. Every time a GOP leader retires in the House, the seat goes to a rodent. Quite telling.
That’s an interesting way to put it.
Beatty does need to prove he can raise funds.
And I thought that Delta force didn't exist!?
No, no. He was a Force Officer who worked for Delta before the airlines strike.
That’s still very impressive. Kerry won’t be able to use his uniform against Beatty.
You mean Kerry’s uniform with all the medals? BTW, he served in Viet Nam.
We do need grass roots organization in the GOP in the mid-Atlantic/New England states, along with some competancy at the top as well.
“Beatty, who will challenge incumbent John F. Kerry, is a former Delta Force officer, FBI agent and CIA officer. With decades of experience in national service, Beatty told members he hopes to offer voters a change for the better.”
Obviously, he offeres that much. And Kerry is really wearing out his welcome even with the liberal constituancy he represents.
Jeff Beatty/Massachusetts ping
There was a poll out about a month or so ago and it showed Beatty in a dead heat with Kerry (both low to mid-40s).
I saw it, but I didn’t buy it (as much as I’d like to). An unknown Republican would be lucky to get above 30% in the final analysis.
