We've all heard the expression "when it rains it pours." Deep words, right? What the unnamed and unseen sage doesn't tell you, though, is that when it pours in Michigan it's probably part of a monsoon in the heart of a deep jungle type rainy season. And it's probably going to keep raining for a long long time. So grab a tree and hold on tight or else you might get blown away. Case in point... Reports started swirling late yesterday and are all over the papers this morning that Volkswagen and Audi are almost certainly, now, going to announce Thursday their plans to outsource anywhere from 1,000 to closer to 1,600 Michigan jobs. But not to Mexico or Guatemala or China. To the east coast. Of the United States.
Daniel Howes puts it very matter-of-factly in the Detroit News:
"My guess is it's 1,000 jobs that will be either moved or lost when it's all said and done," a source familiar with the details of the impending move said, adding that hundreds of customer service jobs are likely to remain behind. "The ship has sailed. It's guaranteed that they're announcing on Thursday."
But not without a last-ditch appeal by Gov. Jennifer Granholm, recently returned from an investment mission to Sweden and Germany that did not include a stop at VW's corporate headquarters in Wolfsburg.
It was during that trip to Germany that the public first learned the new VW leadership team here in the states was seriously considering an eastward move. The call went out immediately for the governor to make a stop at HQ. No dice. She was booked solid, her spokespeople said. Think now she wishes she'd cancelled a chicken dinner and made the trip?

Doesnt Michael Moore live in Michigan?
I hear Michael Moore does good stand-up. Perhaps he could team up with Jeff Daniels.
Wait. What would MM say? “Come to Michigan, it’s not really as apocalyptic as I made it out to be?”
Oops! Ref. Post #39.
I believe they were reelected in ‘06 not ‘04.
FWIW, no one mentioned that Volkswagen and Audi outsourced the jobs FROM Germany.
“One of my reps went to work in St. Joseph for Whirlpool Corporation he came back in three weeks.”
There is a REASON the neighboring town has been known as Benton Harlem for DECADES. And some buildings are still boarded up from the 70’s race riots.
Where is Appalachian State located?

With investors pushing for a Chrysler sale, Gov. Jennifer Granholm met with DaimlerChrysler CEO Dieter Zetsche in Germany on Tuesday to urge him not to abandon Chrysler or Michigan. United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger, in separate interviews with two Detroit radio stations, reiterated his hope that Chrysler will remain part of DaimlerChrysler.
We all know how that went.
That’s true. You couldn’t get a lot of people to support DeVos.
There are big money Democrats in Macomb and in Oakland county. Mt.
Clemens use to be slightly conservative but now it’s a liberal zone and then there is AnnArbor and other little out crops of Democratic hubs through out the state.
The Southern States are getting all the new auto plants were there are no unions. Toyota is in Kentucky and is building in Missippi. Michigan is dying when it comes to the auto industry and they can thank all the big tax and spend liberal democrats and unions for that.
Striking parallel to parts of the NE states.
If you take a drive up the I-95 corridor you will see a LOT of closed and deserted factories, some of which are being converted to multi housing units and a lot of silly little cottage industries all advertising such as mini vineyards and eco-friendly green soap.
And lousy infrastructure and sky high taxes, on a shrinking tax base.
A great industrial base for a great nation?
IDIOTS!!! Michigan and Ohio get what they deserve....sadly.
I don't know about that...
Failing grade for Chemung National economic study gives F to 31 New York counties.
But it's for the same reasons.
Note to the nation: Keep voting for 'Rats and RINOs and all this, too, can be yours...
Ditto for NYS. Check out what Eliot "Troopergate" (aka Hsu Me the Money) Spitzer recently did for union workers...
A gal I worked with lost her job a month after I did last January. Unfortunately, her husband works for Volkswagon at their Auburn Hills corp. office. Hopefully they will offer him a job at the new location.......

The fascist elements in Virginia stepped forward in the last election and got their boy, James Webb, elected as Virginia’s newest senator. Guess it’s right and fitting that Volkswagen follow eh!
That vapid communist Granholm travels to the UP to hobnob with her hippy friends and kayak with the fishes. Photo opportunity, anyone?
Businesses are leaving. I’m predicting 20 to 30% unemployment in many rural Michigan counties in ‘08.
The final nail in the coffin is being set right now. Michigan citizens who left for the big labor markets in the 1960s are returning to retire. Those whom I know are having a tough go. They are regretting the move, need to find part-time work and that work doesn’t exist.
This state is shutting down.
