We've all heard the expression "when it rains it pours." Deep words, right? What the unnamed and unseen sage doesn't tell you, though, is that when it pours in Michigan it's probably part of a monsoon in the heart of a deep jungle type rainy season. And it's probably going to keep raining for a long long time. So grab a tree and hold on tight or else you might get blown away. Case in point... Reports started swirling late yesterday and are all over the papers this morning that Volkswagen and Audi are almost certainly, now, going to announce Thursday their plans to outsource anywhere from 1,000 to closer to 1,600 Michigan jobs. But not to Mexico or Guatemala or China. To the east coast. Of the United States.
Daniel Howes puts it very matter-of-factly in the Detroit News:
"My guess is it's 1,000 jobs that will be either moved or lost when it's all said and done," a source familiar with the details of the impending move said, adding that hundreds of customer service jobs are likely to remain behind. "The ship has sailed. It's guaranteed that they're announcing on Thursday."
But not without a last-ditch appeal by Gov. Jennifer Granholm, recently returned from an investment mission to Sweden and Germany that did not include a stop at VW's corporate headquarters in Wolfsburg.
It was during that trip to Germany that the public first learned the new VW leadership team here in the states was seriously considering an eastward move. The call went out immediately for the governor to make a stop at HQ. No dice. She was booked solid, her spokespeople said. Think now she wishes she'd cancelled a chicken dinner and made the trip?

“Pubbies had control of the three branches of gov for 12 years. The canuck never had those kind of votes, vetos or supreme ct decisions. She aint great but jobs left for mexico and china before you ever heard her name.”
And, the GOP had both houses of the Legislature for 4 years beyond that.
Michigan’s government today is a direct product of the GOP’s failures of the past 16 years.
The economy reflects the state’s continued reputation as a big, bad, union state, and so long as the UAW controls the manufacturing jobs, the State employee jobs, and the major health insurance provider, we’re hosed.
I left Michigan for Atlanta a year ago. I encourage the people of Michigan to vote with their feet.
yep, and the next round of “improvements” will raise property taxes on homes that can’t be sold at fair market value.
The state is circling the toilet bowl big-time. One of my reps went to work in St. Joseph for Whirlpool Corporation he came back in three weeks. Said Michigan “totally sucks ass.”
Isn’t Michigan where most of the Muslims are settling too? Do most of them work, or are they on the dole?
To be honest, I don’t know the answer. I’ve read conflicting claims.
Things will improve soon. Jeff Daniels in his ads sponsored by the Michigan Economic Development Commission talks about how wonderful Michigan is for repertory theaters. Michigan taxes productive businesses in order to fund repertory theatres. At some point there will be one on every street corner! So Michigan looses a thousand jobs here and a thousand jobs there. They will all be replaced by actors flooding in from throughout the nation!
Yeah but DeVos was a mediocre candidate to challenge her. The guy had all the charisma of plywood.
“I encourage the people of Michigan to vote with their feet.”
We’re all stuck here, with houses that can’t sell for 75% of what they sold for 5 years ago. If I move now, I’ll lose the house to the bank.
Then again, if I don’t get work soon, I’ll lose it anyway.
“Isnt Michigan where most of the Muslims are settling too? Do most of them work, or are they on the dole?”
99% of them work their butts off. Quite frankly I’d take 1000 of them than 1,000,000 of our welfare-state native-born.
“Yeah but DeVos was a mediocre candidate to challenge her. The guy had all the charisma of plywood.”
The guy came to Jackson, and gave away a stack of fleece jackets w/ his logo on it.
That’s about as much as I remember of him, and I’m a GOP guy!
i was in the same spot as you. we moved anyway, rented the house for half what its worth and are hoping we can hold on until we can sell it for 100,000 less than its worth just to unload it and start over from SCRATCH after 20 years of bustin our butts. Thanks michigan. thanks granholm and THANKS michigan voters....you stupid nimrods!!
Mr. Jeff came to my small office 15 years ago looking for money w/o a penny to his project. I guess I bought a theatre!
The HQ is coming to Herndon, VA. It will be about 10 miles from my home near Dulles Airport.
I heard that ad in North Dakota and laughed. I moved 6 semi-loads of machine tools from MI to ND this year.
We're doing fine here without the repertory theaters.
Oh God. Thank you, thank you, thank you for making me a Texan.
Wrong, the States rural area is all Republican, but its the heavily occupied Detroit that always throws the vote to Dems. Its all the welfare cases that live in Detroit.
Maybe the ford plant here in Norfolk, Virginia?
When Michigan reelected “Little Debbie” Stabenow to the Senate and Jennifer “I wannabe Marilyn Monroe” Granholm as Governor in ‘04, I said: THEY WILL DESERVE WHAT THEY GET.
“Things will improve soon. They will all be replaced by actors flooding in from throughout the nation!”

They’re appealing to the “creative class.” Now all that’s needed is some bike paths and Starbucks and they’ll all be farting through silk as the russians say.
