ANNAPOLIS— After eleven days of presidential straw poll ballots cast at the Maryland Republican Party’s State Fair booth, Congressman Ron Paul (R-Texas) was announced last night as the winner.

The Maryland Republican Party’s first-ever presidential straw poll at the State Fair resulted in nearly 1,000 Marylanders casting a vote for their favorite Republican candidate for president.

Fine. I appreciate your candor. And I'm not criticizing your opinions, although they differ from mine. But! You fall into the mindset of many here who try to promote Ron Paul for of his conservativism. Sorry, but he's not and he ain't gonna be. So, just be yourself. Identify yourself, and Ron Paul, to the best of your ability, and let the chips fall where they may. Just don't be part of the 'boys' who want to insinuate Ron Paul into a truely conservative image. That's all I ask. Dr. Paul is conservative on the issue that matters the most to me - self determination. I'm of the mindset that we have fought two wars on this particular issue and only won one of them.

What you seem to be confused by is that he passes the requests for the spending to the apppropriations committe and once they finalize the bill - he votes no.

Now compare that to Tom Coburn, who refuses to pass along the requests for earmarks. It does little good to vote against a bill when you've helped stuff it with pork and when you know a majority are going to vote to pass it anyway.

Since when did conservatives have to use deception and lies to further an argument anyway?

When did Paulites learn to twist themselves like pretzels to defend Paul's pork rolls?

Oh, now that’s rich...

Perhaps the Mod decided to put it were it gets the attention it deserves..

Out of respect for Dr. Paul of course.

If Paul had not sent in his earmarks the money would have been spent on other earmarks, because the money had already been slotted for spending on somebody's earmarked pork somewhere.

So, since the money is there, he's just going to grab as much as he can.

Very principled way to show his strong opposition to earmarks.

And the fact that his earmarks for $400,000,000 would go to his home district had nothing to do with it, right?

And when are you going to produce proof that a single earmark was funded? Or that he voted for a single one to pass the House?

Your list is moronic. Prove that any of these have passed.

No, earmarks INCREASE spending.

All Tom Coburn is doing is screwing his base.

All Tom Coburn is doing is walking the walk. Something Ron Paul and his camp followers apparently cannot grasp as they erect one absurd defense after another of Ron Paul's travelling earmark emporium.

“Your Reagan is a libertarian fantasy that didn’t exist.”

While you are correct in that Ronald Reagan never declared himself a libertarian, he regularly spoke very highly of libertarianism as an ideal and an ideology.

Have you read the Reagan Diaries? Most of the rightwing political leaders Reagan blasted and/or complained about in his writings are/were those who were more associated with the Christian conservative movement, ie: Richard Viguerie and others of the New Right ilk.

For the most part, Libertarians liked Reagan - and Reagan liked Libertarians. Just the way it is...

As for Ron Paul’s win in MD, I drove through MD over the weekend - and there were “Ron Paul: Revolution” signs hanging off of bridge overpasses on routes leading to their State Fair, where the MDGOP straw poll took place. Also, MD has a pretty active libertarian contingent - both within and outside of the GOP.

Doesn’t matter — there was taxpayer money up for grabs, and he dove in with both hands grasping at it. Whether he succeeded or not, he’s still a hypocrite for going after it.

And when are you going to produce proof that a single earmark was funded?

The larger point is, he is asking for increased federal spending for clearly non-federal projects. Maybe you could research the fact that Tom Coburn refuses to play that game. You know, an ACTUAL principled conservative, as opposed to a two-faced alleged conservative.

Am I in the Twilight Zone? I keep saying one thing and some of you people are hearing another. No, since the money is going to be spent anyway, he's going to grab as much as he can for his constituents, because otherwise it would just be spent on someone else's constituents. Maybe an anology would help: a beautiful old building is going to be torn down. Paul fights against it, but they tear it down anyway. So Paul decide to salvage some of the rubble for his friends. See now?

"Fred Thompson voted for that, Ron Paul against. Your point?"

You throw Fred Thompson in there and then ask for clarification?

How the hell did Fred Thompson come into this?

The point is this: If one is going to present an image as being against earmarks, or his supporters are going to use that as a campaign tool, then one should be against them 100%. No, tricks, no voting so they could go to committee then voting against when they come out. Heck, we all know that when they come out at least some of them will/may be for his district. And if they are, he's then voting against his district's best interests (in your eyes) is he not?

If Ron Paul wants a clear, non-ambiguous image of being against earmarks, then he has to be against them from the outset. PERIOD! None of this flip-flop garbage.

No, since the money is going to be spent anyway,

Please prove your core assertion.

Last I noticed, we are running a deficit. So there is no surplus to be spent. Any earmark goes against the deficit.
