Apparently, Sen. Craig left a voicemail (at the wrong number) for his lawyer, Billy Martin, the morning of his press conference.
Roll Call posted the audio here. The Idaho Statesman has the transcript:
"Yes, Billy, this is Larry Craig calling. You can reach me on my cell. Arlen Specter is now willing to come out in my defense, arguing that it appears by all that he knows that I have been railroaded and all that.
"Having all of that, we have reshaped my statement a little bit to say it is my intent to resign on Sept. 30. I think it is important for you to make as bold a statement as you are comfortable with this afternoon, and I would hope you could make it in front of the cameras.
"I think it would help drive the story that I’m willing to fight, that I’ve got quality people out there fighting in my defense, and that this thing could take a new turn or a new shape, it has that potential. Anyway, give me a buzz or give Mike a buzz on that. We’re headed to my press conference now.
"Thank you. Bye."
“Give me a buzz Billy, I’ll be in the head.”
So we have Arlen Specter to thank for the upcoming fiasco.
I thought that Billy Martin was a baseball manager but what do I know?
According to Scottish Law, Larry Craig is innocent. His only guilt was having a wide stance.
Certainly has the decision making quality to be a fine senator. He needs to buy a clue.
Sounds like he might play ball.
Doubt the rest of the GOP will rally round the “pole”, so to speak.
Arrogant elitist irrationality defending arrogant elitist stupidity.
Hillaryous!
"...ya know Larry, I don't think it's over for you.... not by long shot... why you could fight this thing and actually win. I'm serious.... so what if you've announced your intent to resign and Otter's already picked your replacement. Hell, that don't nothin'.... I mean, you can still salvage your career. At least that's the way I see it. Really".
Specter really lived up to his reputation on Sunday, when he agreed with pretty much everything -gag- Leahy said on the Fox show.
Craig has got to step aside for stupidity, more than for any other reason.
BTW, can anyone cite any examples of police interrogation tapes being made public before this case?
Pomposity red lined.

Dead on! Any senator who thinks he’s so incredibly vital to the nation that he MUST remain in office at all costs, has automatically disqualified himself. He needs to go (along with many of the other Republican and Democrat elitists who rule like it’s their God-given right). NO ONE can possibly be that important in a nation of over 300 million citizens, of which literally millions would probably make good senators.
If Craig can show in a speedy unambiguous fashion that he WAS railroaded by the detective, then yes he should stay and fight. For example, if there is a video of the detective boasting before the arrest he was going to wait for Craig and arrest him whether there was a crime or not, fine.
Anything short of that, Craig is deluding himself.
If anyone had any doubts that Specter is doing his best to destroy the Republican party, this liitle diddy should put that to rest. Specter has made sure that Hillary’s no nos are put on the back page, while keeping Craig’s perverted actions on the front.
Coming from a state with two Dem Senators, does not leave me much room to talk, but I certainly hope Mr “Scottish Law” doesn’t make it through the next primary. He was helped mightily by “our” President last time. Perhaps next time we will be luckier.
In Michigan, we had what I thought was a good conservative candidate to run against Senator Stabenow. Liddy Dole showed up and talked a RINO into running, and of course a great many establishment Republicans fell immediately into line.
Craig can't even dial the phone without screwing up.
I heard quips of Craig’s sons on TV talking up his defense. Aside from the creepy tone of his voice, the kid could only say that he trusts his father’s version of the story. Kinda lame, until Arlen comes to the surface and redefines the definition of snake.
Larry's mouthpiece....
