Saying “hopefully they won’t live much longer” is a FACT?
Yes because a position opened up! Do you know how rare that is now?
And the trend in engineering is to recruit older managers from outside the company. So being loyal to a company means not getting promoted.
Sure, you can blame me all you want, but it's a different world now, and you are unable to realize that.
Geeezzz bud........you have totally given up haven’t you? It’s not that different today. People move around, change jobs and companies.
The trend is towards older managers? You think there’s a reason for this? Companies don’t do things like that without a reason.
Yes it is a fact: if they won't retire, I hope they don't live much longer so that the people below them get promoted. So we can enjoy some of the American dream....
Don't you think it is weird that we consider guys in their 40s "younger workers". Isn't that against nature?
One thing you may want to think about. Maybe your company doesn’t believe you are qualified for management. Not everyone can fit into that mold. Knowing your job is one thing, managing others is totally different.
Yes, because there are so many of them now and they don't retire, like in the article.
What message does that send the "younger workers"?
You never answered me: Don't you think it is odd that we call guys in their 40s "younger workers" now?
No, they didn't interview anyone in the company for the position, even a "younger worker" who was their longer than I was. Boy was he pissed, but the company has some big defense contracts now, so he stayed too....
The Army thought I was qualified for management when they promoted me to Captain, but people are forcibly retired out of the army to make room for younger guys.
Engineering is a Geriocracy.
Why would I think it’s odd????? Would you rather work for a 20 year old that didn’t know anything or some one older that you could learn from? 40 isn’t old, it’s a lot younger than I am. I would love to be 40 again. I got my first management job in engineering when I was 26. It was hard because I had older people working for me. I treated everyone the same and used the older peoples experience to help me develop my department. Also remember, if the older people weren’t good at what they did, they wouldn’t be there.
My advice to you is get out of engineering and do something that gives you more pleasure......or resign yourself to the fact that you may never get promoted. I wouldn’t do that, but it seems you’ve made up your mind that you’re stuck where you are. Go to work in the grocery industry, drive a truck.....anything that gives you pleasure.
We have a relative that is a full Col in the Rangers. He will never see a battle command again. The younger guys can move faster and think faster..........so what’s the big deal? Just life.
Allright, I HAVE HAD ENOUGH.
Stop your dang whining, and go find a job you like.
Complaining that I stole it, because I am four years older, is crap.
I knew it, I knew it. Good ole George Patton is still alive. Good to have you back General. Now.......go kick some ass.
BUMP
dinosaurs rule.
Maybe—if you don’t mind maintaining legacy code (which is what I assume you’re doing). All the young kids want to do Java, C#, ASP.Net, & web services. COBOL is so 1960s. Never worked with Tandem (sounds like it was invented by Radio Shack).
Reminds me of the young man who was applying for a job at our facility, Jeans with a hole in the knee ( Latest style I’m told), Long messy hair, T-Shirt with cut off sleeves and flip flops for shoes.
Seems he was some sort of sports star at his school but his grades were not good enough for higher education.
He was telling the interviewer what his conditions were if he was going to work here.
Never saw his face again.
This thread is further proof that you’re all cracker geezers here! I’m outta here....
Thank you for making my point. No wonder it takes two incomes now to support a family.
I'm not. You're 44--you're still a "junior worker" and will be until you are 70.
You don't see anything wrong with that?
Yeah, 'Cuz as a former Army Officer with a clearance and a BSEE I was just like that guy....
Sheesh....
I don’t know how to answer. As a junior worker, I am doing allright.
