I told my boss that I could out work anybody he was interviewing for a position that I wanted.

Yes because a position opened up! Do you know how rare that is now?

And the trend in engineering is to recruit older managers from outside the company. So being loyal to a company means not getting promoted.

Sure, you can blame me all you want, but it's a different world now, and you are unable to realize that.

Geeezzz bud........you have totally given up haven’t you? It’s not that different today. People move around, change jobs and companies.

The trend is towards older managers? You think there’s a reason for this? Companies don’t do things like that without a reason.

One thing you may want to think about. Maybe your company doesn’t believe you are qualified for management. Not everyone can fit into that mold. Knowing your job is one thing, managing others is totally different.
