Univisión's Republican presidential debate has been called off after only one contender agreed to participate, though the network hopes to reschedule. The debate for Democrats is still on for Sept. 9.
Univisión planned to air the first presidential debates in Spanish on Sept. 9 and 16, one for Democrats, the other for Republicans, trumpeting a national coming-out party for Hispanic voters.
Except Republican candidates aren't coming. Only Ariz. Sen. John McCain agreed to participate in the event at the University of Miami.
So much for Sept. 16.
''That date is off the table,'' university spokeswoman Bárbara Gutiérrez said Wednesday.
She said a GOP debate hasn't been ruled out for later in the fall.
''We're thinking that everyone wants to see how the Democratic one goes before they commit,'' she said.
All eight Democratic candidates are slated to show up Sept. 9, and party leaders plan to highlight the contrast. The New Democratic Network, a nationwide political group, is planning news conferences and inviting Hispanic leaders, including Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey, former Cabinet member Henry Cisneros and U.S. Rep. Luís Gutiérrez of Illinois.
Most of the Republican field also ignored invitations to attend Hispanic-oriented conferences in Florida organized by the National Association of Latin Elected Officials and the National Council of La Raza.

Does anybody actually watch the debates anyway? The ones that do, do they actually learn anything new about the candidates? Way too many debates IMO.
Totally predictable. - Here is another totally predictable event of note.
His withdrawal from the process.
Honestly, other than ego, I cannot see why he is still in unless he is hoping for some clout as a possible VP who might help deliver Hispanics.
IMO, that view would be deluded. - and I used to think that McCain would be the anointed one in 08, but his slide into pinheaded, out of touch elitism is now absolute.
Again, it sounds as though he and many of the GOP live on another planet if they believe that the base is going to vote for them.
See ya later, John
Much too early for debates. Just face time and no substance now. After the primaries I might watch the top 3 candidates.
>> Anyone at all surprised Juan McCain was the only republican to agree?
Not I.
Funny thing is — it’s still far from certain that he’d be able to win the debate. ;-)
Isn’t there a Republican debate on the 17th?
Imagine! The 16th featuring Thompson-McCain? Everybody would watch that debate! :)
In other words, I would find them boring and confusing.
What top three candidates after the primaries? It’s only the primary winners after the primaries, and if the GOP primary winner ends up being a RINO, then it’s already all over for the GOP!
I’m not a big fan of pandering to special interest groups, but is this the best idea in dealing with the Latin community in this country? Then again, there’s no doubt the questions would be tilted...

Warning to any Republican even thinking about going:
If you attend this debate, or any other debate like it (designed to appeal to those who refuse to learn English), you have lost any chance at getting my vote.
