Ralph Peters this morning on Marine Corps humor compels me to share my own bit of the same, which I was actually saving for a forthcoming piece. He beats me to the punch on writing a piece on Marine humor, so here is one from the vault.

I loved the reasoning as to why Marines dont have a football team.

Good stuff!!!

Here’s a couple more:

“Never draw incoming fire...It annoys everyone around you!”

“When in doubt, empty the magazine...”

OK, here’s a true-life example. The day my son graduated boot camp at Parris Island, they were marching the platoon from the barracks toward the Parade Deck. At the rear of the platoon were two Drill Instructors. They passed by a small hut where three or four raw recruits were nervously waiting, obviously for some sort of disciplinary action. As the platoon passed, one DI barked an order, “Eyes Right”. The entire platoon proceeded to give the evil-eye to these recruits. As the DIs passed by me, I heard the other DI say to the first one, “Classic”.

I tend to “accidentally” miss the vein doing IV’s, which require some fishing.

"Good evening folks, this is Armed Forces Radio and it's 7 o"clock,

Unless you're in the Navy in which case it's seven bells

And if you're in the Air Force it's nineteen hundred hours

And if you're in the Marines, the big hand is on the twelve....."

During the Korean War there was a cartoonist called “Sgt Mike”.

Hr drew a cartoon showing a gazillion Chinese pouring down a hill attacking these two Marines. The private says, “Sarge, do we take prisoners?”

A friend’s Marine son, when questioned about a scar on his abdomen, replied “C-section, SIR!”.

Military humor is funny.

It is. It's funny in a Steven Wright, Bill Murray kind of way.

Early in my son’s Marine life he was bit by a spider and the bite got infected. He dug the infection out with a K-bar and waited till he got home to have a doctor treat it. The next week he did his Recon screening and passed.

My friend’s son wrote this just before he deployed to Iraq the second time:

Marine Lance Cpl. Eric Freeman
Feb. 16, 2004

I see myself standing at the edge of a precipice, about to take the plunge. In 24 hours I’ll be on a plane, leaving Okinawa and all the amenities we always take for granted. Soon I’ll return to “The Land of Squalor” as the Sgt. Major puts it. Back to Iraq. I guess my Karma has some more debt to repay.

I suppose this must be what it feels like to walk the ‘green mile’. I’ve known it was coming since November, but it’s just now hitting home. I’m about to spend almost twice as long in Iraq as I did my first trip and that first trip was the most miserable time of my life. So this will be at least twice as bad as the worst time of my life. Hot damn, I love this job.
————————————— -—————————
Unfortunately, Eric was killed in a car accident stateside just prior to his third deployment.

“Never draw incoming fire...It annoys everyone around you!”

Also, never share a foxhole with anyone braver than you.

A Marine staff NCO can be mean to anyone. I’m sure the corpsman understood that, and didn’t really expect the Gatorade to be shared.
It wasn’t mean, it was tradition.
