WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Larry Craig said Saturday he will resign, succumbing to rapidly intensifying pressure from within his own Republican Party.
"The people of Idaho deserve a senator who can devote 100 percent of his time and effort to the critical issues of our state and of our nation," said Craig, speaking under a clear blue sky at 10:30 a.m. (12:30 p.m. ET) outside the historic Boise Depot in Idaho's capital city.
"Therefore it is with sadness and deep regret that I announce that it is my intent to resign from the Senate, effective September 30th."
His announcement was greeted by some applause from the gathering.

He did the right thing. The last thing the GOP needed was ethical baggage heading into the 2008 elections.

I feel for him... Careful. That's how he ended up where he is today.

I feel badly for his family.
It's very sad, but good that he made this decision now.

Good.
Imagine if this report was released next year, just two months before his re-election.

When Republican criminals or perverts are exposed, they are ushered out.
When it is a Dem, they are promoted (Frank, Kennedy, Clinton.
A very stark difference.

I don’t know who tried to post “Gay” Senator Craig quits in breaking, but as Larry Craig has stated that he is not gay, I don’t think the poster’s choice of headline was appropriate. Fortunately, a mod seemed to agree.
I don’t know what his exact proclivities are, but think he has the right to choose to tell us or not tell us.

Now let’s get rid of Vetter and we will be able to start fresh with no controversies.

Craig then announced he was moving to the Castro district in San Francisco. (but he’s not gay)

The GOP deserves high praise for this week's handling of the Senator Larry Craig sexual hijinx.
So far only Newt Gingrich and one post in this thread have attempted to deflect responsibility onto the Clintons.

That's true and it is a double standard. The difference is conservatives insist on standards. Liberals are non-judgmental. Had President Clinton been a Republican, no question, he would have had to resign. But Democrats get a pass for immoral behavior. Republicans don't.

I was talking with a Rat superior yesterday at work - she thinks we are all 100% BS artists for being happy about cleaning out the GOP.
I said something nearly got me in trouble.

This guy didn’t buy himself any goodwill by supporting Bush’s
“It’s not amnesty” bill. Every Idahoan I heard commenting on talk radio said as much.

It is what needed to be done.
Lt. Gov. Risch will have a good head start now to hold the seat for the GOP in 2008.
Unfortunately Craig made another poor choice by not making his resignation effective immediately.
However, it is done now, and there is nothing left to be said.
I should remind people, kicking a man when he is down is a reflection of poor character, so let us represent FR positively.
