Court: Mexican trucks program to proceed (9th Circus says 'Let 'em roll!')

SAN FRANCISCO - The Bush administration can go ahead with a pilot program to allow as many as 100 Mexican trucking companies to freely haul their cargo anywhere within the U.S. for the next year, a federal appeals court ruled Friday.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals denied a request made by the Teamsters union, the Sierra Club and the nonprofit Public Citizen to halt the program.

The appeals court ruled the groups have not satisfied the legal requirements to immediately stop what the government is calling a "demonstration project," but can continue to argue their case.

The trucking program is scheduled to begin Thursday.

In court papers filed earlier this week, the Teamsters and Sierra Club argued there won't be enough oversight of the drivers coming into the U.S. from Mexico.

They also argued that public safety would be endangered in a hasty attempt by the government to comply with parts of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

The trade agreement requires that all roads in the United States, Mexico and Canada to be opened to carriers from all three countries.

Canadian trucking companies have full access to U.S. roads, but Mexican trucks can only travel about 20 miles inside the country at certain border crossings such as ones in San Diego and El Paso, Texas.

“I say if we let them take anymore of our land, we’re pretty much DOA”

YOU are correct. They are COLONIZING, not assimilating.

China is nothing if not patient. They are happy to wait another 50-100 years to take over Asia :-)

To over-dramatize it, it’s like someone cutting off your arms and one leg and then trying to apologize and tell you why it was for your benefit...

You'll get a kick out of this.

Last week I had my son's B-day party on the beach here in Nor-Cal. We rented a couple of tables that are reserved for parties.

As the party progressed, we rapidly became the minority ethnicity on the beach. All around us were....them. Happily jabbering away in Spanish, looking at us furtively, waiting for us to vacate...which we did. By leaving to go down to the water, but with our party stuff still on the tables and balloons still tied to the perimeter of the rental area.

So of course when we got back there were 20 or so of them sitting on our seats, occupying our rented area. No apologies. Just "me no speaky Ingles" BS, and averted eyes. No move to get up, give us back our tables.

It didn't matter in practical terms, since we were going to leave, but that shouldn't matter. It was our space, we paid for it. But they simply squatted on it. The proprietors ( Beach concessionaire ) was too timid to tell them to take a hike.

It was sort of a metaphor for what's happening, or rather what has happened to LA and large areas of other major cities and even rural areas now.

They think it's OK to do it because if we're weak enough to let them, then it should be theirs.

They have a point on that.

That’s an excellent point. They’ll wait 500 years if that what it takes. They are not much different than he Middle East, in that they have extreme historical insight. We hit the “industrial age” and quite literally lost our minds, and with it (seemingly) the ability to see beyond the next quarter’s profit margins or the next OPEC report.

There is a demographic tidal wave headed towards us and if we are going to survive we will need our neighbors to the south.

What we will need is an orderly legal program of immigration of people who have something going for them when they get here. We don't need a wave of third world wretched refuse. It was poetic but it makes lousy policy..

Whats really amazing is the absolute refusal by some to acknowlege that the above mindset simply isn't always in accord with the nation's best interests.

With those types "free trade" the way they define it is freakin' religion.

” We hit the “industrial age” and quite literally lost our minds, and with it (seemingly) the ability to see beyond the next quarter’s profit margins or the next OPEC report.”

Well stated!

Back in the 80’s, Wall Street and corporate America began paying bonuses based on the price of the company stock. This has been a disater, as execs will now only look at the next quarter, instead of the big picture. It caused Enron to do what it did. Illegal labor to flourish, and outsourcing to come to pass. All of this will collapse like a house of cards if it continues.

It is amazing. The free-traders replaced “open trade-ness” with the word “freedom”. That’s what my ‘degrees of freedom’ comment was about. They then use the term interchangably to mean freedom regarding trade & rights. Then they put up graphics regarding “Degrees of Freedom” (lol) I recently posted that ‘it’s impossible to even communicate with such non-sense’. And so they begin questioning if you are “against freedom”. I’ve seen others chase their tails with that, but when I do I try to point that out to help them understand it’s futile to even talk with them (lol)
