After five terms in the U.S. Senate, Warner, 80, said he will not seek re-election in 2008, when his term expires. He is considered one of the nation's senior statesmen and one of the most powerful members of Congress on defense issues. Warner is the state's second-longest serving senator after Harry F. Byrd Sr. (D), who spent 32 years in the U.S. Senate.
"I've tired to be true to myself and true to all the people of the great Commonwealth," Warner said. "I've done my best. There is a fullness of time and ground. I yield that time, so others can advance.
"I made my decision in the last day or two after consulting with my wife and family and after my 10th trip to Iraq and seeing all the brave and courageous men and women in uniform."
In recent months, Warner had come under increased pressure to seek a sixth term from members of the Republican establishment, especially after last year's Democratic takeover of the Senate, which left the GOP at a 51-49 disadvantage.

Good riddance.
We’re likely to get a Dem to replace him.
The "Republican Establishment" needs to FReep occasionally and see what the people who do the votin' think about jackasses like Warner
..George Allen comeback time perhaps...
I sure hope not. He was pretty lame last time.
Excellent decision. Best to retire than get booted.
Yep, another Warner - no relation.
I was thinking the same thing. ALot can in politics in a years time.
what wife? when did he remarry?
he’s just despicable, so nary a tear will be shed over this annuoncement. Unfortunately, his substitute won’t be any better, but at least won’t carry an “R” after his name to give the illusion that Republicans in VA are actually represented in the Senate.
The panel on Brit’s show (absent Brit) unanimously said the seat is former Gov. Warner’s (D) if he wants it....and, of course....we end up losing the Senate, big time.
It would be poetic justice if we could fill Warner’s seat with Oliver North. Works for me.
I’ll second that!
Warner will be no loss.
GOOD RIDDANCE!!
Well I fer one am, umm, heartbroken. Yeah, that’s it. Heartbroken.
I trust his views. Warner wasn’t a chickenhawk.
“At the outbreak of the Korean War in the summer of 1950, Senator Warner interrupted his law studies and commenced a second tour of active military duty, beginning in October 1950, this time as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. A year later, in October 1951, as a first lieutenant in communications, he volunteered for duty in Korea and served as a ground officer with the First Marine Air Wing. Following his active service in Korea, he remained in the Marine Corps Reserve for 10 years and was promoted to the rank of Captain.”

With all due respect to Sen. Warner’s service, and to yours, military service does not make one necessarily honorable in other venues. Ask Murtha.
