WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Karl Rove was nearly overcome with emotion Friday as colleagues privately paid tribute to the political adviser as he leaves the White House, senior officials say.
At the closed-door senior staff meeting at 7:30 a.m. in the Roosevelt Room, Rove was surprised with a slide show of photos chronicling his nearly seven years at President Bush's side, through good times and bad.
White House Press Secretary Tony Snow told CNN that Rove was so touched by the tribute that he didn't have any final words for his colleagues. "He was pretty choked up," Snow said.
Although he didn't speak, Rove left farewell notes on the conference table for each senior aide, thanking them for their friendship.
Aides were not planning to throw a farewell party, typically held at Blair House across the street, because Rove and his wife were heading out of town in the afternoon for a vacation. Senior White House aides were planning to see the couple off on West Executive Drive in one last tribute.

Farewell, Rove, you magnificent bastard.
Just as Rove choreographed, that magnificent bastard!
Egad. Who’s going to run the Halliburton weather machine?
OMG, here comes the hurricanes!!
Who cares what this schill did or did not do he is just another overrated empty suit(or dress) for sale to the highest bidder!
He is fully qualified to fill any seat in either House or Senate or any seat of the president's cabinet.
Would it be an over-statement to say at least 50% of all the present occupants are likely to be liars, queers, thieves, fornicators, or a traitor to his(her)oath of office or just an all around horse's ass or all the above?
More importantly, who’s next in line to suck-up to LaRaza?
Yieks! That is kinda harsh.
OH STUFF IT! ROVE IS A BRILLIANT MAN AND SERVED THIS COUNTRY WELL. HE IS TAKING A WELL-EARNED BREAK FROM ALL YOU PETTY PEOPLE.
So is he announcing his run for the White House on Monday then? :D
If you know the truth about this President you know that he has surrounded himself with decent, hard working people who over all have done an excellent job in the worst possible circumstances. Any mistakes made, and there have been only a few I can think of (amnesty bill), have been honest mistakes.
Rove has served this country for seven years in an outstanding manner. I would welcome him as friend if I could.
Thank you, Karl Rove. May the wind be at your back.
Give thanks, not acrimony.
Thank you Karl, for everything!
Now...take the long weekend and report to the Fred Thompson campaign on Tuesday!!
