Chomsky On The Cold War Between Washington And Tehran
Payvand ^ | August 31, 2007

Posted on 08/31/2007 10:40:31 AM PDT by Fennie

For the United States, the primary issue in the Middle East has been and remains effective control of its unparalleled energy resources. Access is a secondary matter. Once the oil is on the seas it goes anywhere. Control is understood to be an instrument of global dominance. Iranian influence in the "crescent" challenges U.S. control. By an accident of geography, the world's major oil resources are in largely Shiite areas of the Middle East: southern Iraq, adjacent regions of Saudi Arabia and Iran, with some of the major reserves of natural gas as well. Washington's worst nightmare would be a loose Shiite alliance controlling most of the world's oil and independent of the United States...

The nicest thing I can say about the political pronouncements of Noam Chomsky is that he very well might be a brilliant linguist.

I’ll summarize the article for those without time to read it:

Control of the world by U.S. = Bad
Control of the world by Islamic & Chinese communist bloc = Good

Chomsky is both a bigot and a geopolitical moron. That said, there is one accurate statement in this screed. "Once the oil is on the seas, it can go anywhere."

Let's assume that Iran somehow got control of the entire Middle East oil supplies -- all of it. What are they going to do with it? They have to sell it, or the entire Middle East would descend into a bunch of camel jockeys with no electricity or air conditioning.

And when they sell it, it goes onto the seas in large tankers. Who has the largest, most powerful navy in the world? Hellooo. That oil WILL arrive in the US, under a declared war, and we would make nice with Japan and others for "taking" their oil. (Here's your check.)

Chomsky doesn't think that far ahead or as honestly. But the war planners at the Pentagon certainly have.

Gosh, a lot of words in the article...big ones even! But the shallowness is astounding.

Cut the vocabulary back and a third-grade social-studies student could have written it.

According to ExxonMobile the US gets 15% of it’s oil from the middle east. 55% from the US, Mexico, and Canada.

What he says is true. What he misses is the significance. He thinks our power is evil. What he is not looking at is the nature of this regime. Men like him said the same thing about the European empires, especially that of Great Britain. But I, looking back, can see no good in the unfettered ambition of the Germans, either in 1914 or 1939, to overthrow this power.

All of Chomsky's brilliance is wasted on perpetuating the myth that he's brilliant.

I am inclined to agree with you, but one small point.

They have to sell it, or the entire Middle East would descend into a bunch of camel jockeys with no electricity or air conditioning.

If we were to take the Tehran Nutjobs at their word, they wouldn't give a fig if they caused the entire Middle East to live as you describe (as long as the Mullahs get plenty of electricity and A/C).

But then, you and I both know what their word is worth....

That’s right, Mr. Billybob...Iran itself had to import gasoline for its people’s needs. Their refineries are substandard
