Maryland knocked New Jersey out of the top spot this year, while Mississippi and West Virginia were the poorest states in the Union.
Maryland is now the wealthiest state in the union, as measured by median household income, according to the latest stats from the Census Bureau.

It would have killed CNN to actually run the above as the real lead story. CNN: Texas = Bush = Hitler + Satan!
“Dishwasher?”
No, but I do own a couple dishes.
Its interesting that almost all of the “rich” states are blue states, while the poorer ones are mostly red states....
I was trying to say they would have let you in the clubhouse...as a ‘dishwasher’....
Poor NJ!
$300K in Texas or Alabama can get you a palatial estate . . .
Yah, you’re looking at a nice 4 bedroom house and 100 acres in Texas . . .
Yep, that pretty much sums it up.
What’s interesting about MS is the wife and I have a combined income of less than 100K and live in relative luxury. Oddly, that is thanks in part to MS being the poorest state as a result of what you mentioned. It’s a paradox.
$300k in MD is a down payment....
Well, parts of Texas anyway.
Not there. I don’t speak the language.
“$300k in MD is a down payment....”
Sheesh, to which part of Md. did you move? Potomac?
>> Yah, youre looking at a nice 4 bedroom house and 100 acres in Texas . . .
The cost-of-living, property values and tax system are the three biggest reasons I’ll likely never leave Texas ... and if I do, it’ll likely be to move to Florida, Colorado or somewhere in the deep south (with comparable property values, cost of living, and state taxes).
Conservative state, great property values, plenty of open space to actually OWN LAND (as opposed to living on top of one another), no income taxes, plenty of big cities, good suburbs, reasonable gas prices, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, concealed carry laws, prayer before high school football games, and we have the death penalty (and we USE it!).
What’s not to like?
God bless Texas!
H
Great people in Texas . . .
But the weather!
lazy, incompetent government workers racking in mega-bucks...mostly federal workers.
Wow. You need to check out the pay scales. If you think you get wealthy working for the Fed, you’re nuckin’ futs.
BTW: In Tony Snow’s departing remarks today he said he was leaving because he was broke and had to make some money on the outside. He made somewhere around $185k and he was one of the highest paid.
Give it a break.
You’re right. I’m confusing cost of living vs industry production.
Can you share the source of the image?
Sorry, I’m not buying it. I have lived in both Kentucky and Maine, there is no way that the state of Kentucky came out lower than Maine. The report is a crock of ted kennedy blather!
Surprised at Alaska? For some it’s very, very good. For others it is a disastrous gamble. Nevertheless, every year a fresh crop of hopefuls shows up and a similarly sized group of severely disappointed failures heads down the road. One thing it does is test a person’s character, not for ethics but for strength.
