Tackling a dilemma right out of a science fiction novel, the state Senate passed legislation Thursday that would bar employers from requiring workers to have identification devices implanted under their skin.
State Sen. Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) proposed the measure after at least one company began marketing radio frequency identification devices for use in humans.
The devices, as small as a grain of rice, can be used by employers to identify workers. A scanner passing over a body part implanted with one can instantly identify the person.
"RFID is a minor miracle, with all sorts of good uses," Simitian said. "But we shouldn't condone forced 'tagging' of humans. It's the ultimate invasion of privacy."
Simitian said he fears that the devices could be compromised by persons with unauthorized scanners, facilitating identity theft and improper tracking and surveillance.
The bill has been approved by the state Assembly and now goes to the governor.
Nine senators opposed the measure, including Bob Margett (R-Arcadia), who said it is premature to legislate technology that has not yet proved to be a problem. "It sounded like it was a solution looking for a problem," Margett said. "It didn't seem like it was necessary."
One company, VeriChip, has been licensed by the Food and Drug Administration to sell implanted identification devices, and about 2,000 people have had them implanted, Simitian said. A representative of the firm did not return calls seeking comment Thursday.
CityWatcher.com, a Cincinnati video surveillance company, has required employees who work in its secure data center to have a microchip implanted in an arm.
Similar technology has been used for years to help identify lost pets.

Employers, landlords, and real estate agents who do not verify legal status of the client should face 5-figure fines.
People who tamper with such identification should face 6-figure fines.
I agree with the person who introduced this bill. If technology like this is available, it will eventually be misused. Why wait until then to do something about it?
Someone needs to push this at the Federal level, since that is where the real threat lies, IMO.

Generally, I’m opposed to microchipping people, although I support it in very limited circumstances...like for elected officials.

While I understand that there are many reasons why people would oppose this, I have to ask: How do you propose to identify illegal immigrants so that they can be denied jobs and housing within our borders?

No one is proposing the name or the number of the beast be applied to anyone. I think it would be good for you to have your own name applied to you. It's really quite different.

By asking for “a document from List A and a document from List B” and REALLY VERIFYING THE DOCUMENTS.
Failure to ID illegals is not a technology inadequacy issue; it’s a lack of political WILL to correctly use the tools we already have at our disposal.
Anyone who tries to implant such a device in me will, in turn, have a 150gr, copper-jacketed device implanted in them. Maybe even more than one.
Maybe we should implant illegals instead. Hmmmm....

You think this matches up with Revelations. I don’t think you understand Revelations. Revelations is about humans who give themselves to Satan, write his name or number on their bodies to show that they belong to Satan.
This is closer to going to the scene of an accident, seeing a headless body and saying, “That’s my cousin I recognize the tattoo on his arm.” The Tattoo is not the Mark of the Beast either. It’s a physical mark that can help identify someone.
