I, for one, am relieved to hear that Idaho Senator Larry Craig is not gay. The disgraced lawmaker said so repeatedly during a ten-minute press conference on Tuesday, when he also informed us he would attempt to retract his guilty plea for trying to pick up an undercover cop in the Minneapolis airport in June.
You know what, Larry? Being openly gay is the hallmark of someone with at least a little bit of courage and a little bit of integrity. An openly gay man lives his life more or less at ease with his sexuality. He does not contrive a heterosexual menage to disguise his true nature, nor does he fabricate a holier-than-thou identity and point judgmental fingers when human frailties are exposed in others. He does not lie, cheat or flash his Senate credentials in an attempt to squirm out of the hot seat. Well, OK, he might lie and cheat now and then. But so does his life partner, so it’s all good.
And these days, although I will not speak for all of you openly gay hound dogs out there, he does not have sex in heavily traveled men’s rooms in the middle of the day. Increasingly, the men picked up for public cruising are often married closet cases, skulking around in a pathetic effort to dip into the gay sex box of their compartmentalized lives. Openly gay men have a million other options for sex, including chat rooms, clubs, parties, and hey—some of them actually have long term relationships.
So don’t even worry about it. No one is going to confuse you with a gay man.
What you are, Larry, is a loser. Not because you tried to hook yourself up between flights. But because you’re not even man enough to face your wife and your constituents and the mirror.
In his press conference, Craig insisted that he was innocent of the charges, written up in exacting detail by a sergeant in the airport police department. Further, Craig said, he was the victim of a “witch hunt” by the Idaho Statesman, a newspaper which had declined to publish rumors of illicit trysts up until this episode hit the press. Please, spare us.
Just as Larry Craig is not gay, nor can he be fairly called a “hypocrite.” I’m speculating, but I imagine that this is a man who reviles homosexuality and wages a relentless internal war against his own urges. No wonder he earned a zero rating from the Human Rights Campaign for his perfect anti-gay voting record. Contrast Craig with closeted gay men like Mark Foley or Jim McGreevey, who at least managed to avoid blatant homophobia in their policy positions. In Craig’s case, I’ll bet his votes against gay rights and in favor of gay marriage bans were based on genuine conviction.
But as I said, Larry Craig cannot fairly be characterized as a “closeted gay man.” He is a man of no character, who deserves no sympathy and who appears ready to carry on his cowardly and self-centered charade to the bitter end. Despicable.
Matt Overboard
Here’s another thing. I love Matt Foreman of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. However, Foreman ends his press release on the Craig matter by asking, “Why, by the way, are Minneapolis tax dollars being used to have plainclothes police officers lurking idly in airport restroom stalls?”
Well, it’s because men are reportedly having sex at noon (in this case) in the middle of the airport when all sorts of people are going in and out to use the facilities.
This is not the classic homophobic scenario, where undercover cops go out of their way to bust the guys in the back of the park in the middle of the night. According to press reports, the airport cruising was a nuisance and there had been numerous arrests. That’s why the airport cops were “lurking” at the expense of taxpayers, who do not particularly enjoy taking a whiz while a couple of ships in the night go at it in the handicapped stall.
Are we so politically correct that we can’t acknowledge that public gay sex is not always fine and dandy?
And here’s Foreman wondering why Congress is now poised to investigate the Craig scandal, while Louisiana Senator David Vitter got away with “a very serious sin in my past” after his name popped up in the “D.C. Madam’s” little black book.
“Let’s see,” writes Foreman, “one Republican senator is involved in soliciting sex from a man and the Republican leadership calls for a Senate investigation and yanks the rug from underneath him. Another Republican senator admits to soliciting the services of a female prostitute, and there’s not only no investigation, but the senator is greeted with a standing ovation by his Republican peers. What explains the starkly different responses? I’d say rank and homophobic hypocrisy.”
I disagree. Once again, this is a case of public lewdness, not homosexuality. Had Craig’s name been found on a gay prostitute’s client list, and had Craig then admitted to “a very serious sin in my past,” I don’t believe he would have been the target of a Congressional investigation. Likewise, had Vitter been arrested and pled guilty to a misdemeanor sex charge, and if he then compounded the offense by denying the whole report, I doubt he would have emerged unscathed.
Haggard Strapped for Cash
Speaking of conservative n’ere do wells (my favorite kind), Ted Haggard has issued a public cry for financial help, asking his former supporters to make a monthly donation to cover his household expenses while he and his wife get their masters degrees in counseling. According to the Associated Press, the founder of the New Life Church mega ministry in Colorado Springs earned $115,000 in 2006 and was given a bonus of $85,000 before being caught doing crystal meth with a gay prostitute last fall. His severance package added another $138,000 to the cookie jar, he owns a $715,051 house, and he receives royalties on several books.
“It looks as though it will take two years for us to have adequate earning power again, so we are looking for people who will help us monthly for two years,” said Haggard in a mass e-mail. “During that time we will continue as full-time students, and then, when I graduate, we won’t need outside support anymore.”
Does Haggard also want a used Volkswagen and some school supplies?
Stupid Is as Stupid Does
Before we exhaust the topic of sleazy Republicans, Florida state representative Bob Allen will face trial Sept. 19 on charges that he agreed to pay $20 to an undercover officer in a Titusville park in exchange for performing oral sex on the afternoon of July 11.
At a hearing on Monday, the judge in the case ruled that some of Allen’s comments to police after the arrest were inadmissible because he had not been read his rights. Those would be the bizarre claims that Allen went along with the officer’s sex scheme because the policeman was a “stocky black guy” and Allen was afraid for his life.
Two other exchanges remain up in the air. First, the moment when Allen asked the arresting officer if “it would help” if he was a state legislator. (The officer said no.) And second, a comment I hadn’t heard about until this minute, in which Allen mentioned that he had $800 in his car, in what sounds like a lightly veiled bribery attempt. According to the Orlando Sentinel, Brevard County Judge Oscar Hotusing said he would rule on the admissibility of those two remarks later. Assistant State Attorney Pat Whitaker argued that the comments were made voluntarily and should be allowed to come out in court.
Like Craig, Allen is insisting that the whole affair was a misunderstanding. And like the Craig case, the details are enshrined in an open and shut police report, that leaves no doubt the men in question were looking for action. In Craig’s case, the senator played footsie with the undercover cop in the next stall. As for Allen, he went in and out of the men’s room three times, and actually entered the stall where the plainclothes officer was using toilet paper to dry his hands and said “hi,” before negotiating a paid intimate rendezvous in another part of the park. According to the taped police interview that has now been tossed out of court, Allen admitted that he also warned the undercover cop that he should be careful because, um, undercover cops were known to be in the area.
Which brings me to my final point. How stupid can these guys get?
Craig should move to San Francisco and run for ANYTHING and he would win.

I personally do not know if he is guilty or not. The MSM is sure spinning it that way. But that tape to me does not prove it. The cop sounded like a bully to me. And he never admitted it to the cop. I am just not sure. I do not know. The evidence has not proved it to me. The gay agenda people have been after him for years. Plus I would like to state the idea if he is homosexual or bisexual that he is a hypocrite is not necessarily true. Not all homosexual people are for same sex marriage. Not all homosexual people believe what they do is right and proper. Not all homosexual people think they are born that way. Not all homosexual people want what the activists want. They are NOT all the same. Some just want to be left alone. But NO the homosexual activists will beat those like that into a pulp. They are the homosexualnazi. You either believe as we think a good homosexual should or we will ruin you. You self hating homo. The MSM is shallow and stupid. Chris Matthews has been horrid about this.

Just one more reason to avoid public rest rooms. I think that the stalls should go all the way to the floor so that this behavior can’t occur.
On the other hand, I agree that the circumstances of this sting are just about a half a bubble off plumb. I want to know if Sen. Craig was deliberately targeted. I want to know if this policeman is a DemocRAT. I smell a democRAT. I want to know if this policeman contributes to democRATS.
He pled guilty without notifying his wife, lawyer, family, etc.
Go away, Senator. Give up your seat to somebody else who may win next election.
If you are guilty, then Heaven help you. If not, maybe you can eventually come back into the fold. But for right now, do the right thing.
And get yourself checked for AIDS, if not for your wife’s sake, at least for yours.

I disagree. Craig will be as much a pariah, if not more of one, amongst the gay crowd as he is amongst his former fan base.
Once “out,” Craig denied it. That’s quite a no-no in the gay community. They will most likely view him as a laughing stock, not to be pitied, but to be scorned.
