FAIRFIELD — Poultry processor Koch Foods has resumed operations at its local plant, even though it lost a large number of workers Tuesday during a raid by federal agents and local police.

Authorities from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Butler County Sheriff's Office and other state, federal and local agencies netted 161 alleged illegal immigrants at the chicken processing plant. Prior to the raid, the Fairfield plant employed more than 500.

Well if the plant kept running after removing this many workers, clearly there are jobs ‘Americans’ will do!

I just had a thought ... this could be an effective tool to rid companies of excess, un-needed 'quota's' type of hiring.

Is there any truth that some companies have been forced to hire people even when they never needed them?

Or am I crazy?

Bet they had to start paying a MARKET LEVEL wage, with the illegals removed as an artificial suppressant.

No one is “entitled” to a “living wage” if their skill set doesn’t merit it in the market.

I bet they were already paying a 'living wage;' they weren't paying benefits and taxes. My understanding is that not even illegals can afford to work for $5 an hour, however, if the employer pays them $8-10 and doesn't have to pay the assorted overhead costs per employee, the employer still comes out ahead.

“Bet they had to start paying a living wage.”

Apparently the workers are surviving here in the US, and have significant amount left over to send back home to Mexico.

So I guess it comes down to the definition of “living.”

For some that might mean big, flat screens in every room, weeks of vacation at luxury resorts.

For another it might mean three hots and a cot. This is the standard many illegal immigrants accept, as it is way better than old mexico.

Not to worry, Koch, those illegals should be back at work by the end of the week — even if they’re deported.

Does anyone know??? Did any Koch management themselves go to the iron chateau?

If so, they should be served only stale chalupas and forced to watch tele-novelas nonstop.

Please define a "living wage" and why someone has a right to it.

I never said anyone had a “right” to a living wage. I said perhaps they will start paying one. Illegal aliens do drive down the wages in industries. Just ask any drywaller.

Depressing wages by hiring illegals who will take any amount because they don’t pay taxes, get free medical at the local hospital, etc. artifically skews the market. What workers consider a living wage will be what they demand of the employer when the market isn’t manipulated like this. And if the employer needs the labor, he will pay it. If you consider the chicken parts too expensive, you will not buy and the employer will in turn lay off his workers or demand they take less.

Do you not believe that an American worker has the “right” to sell his labor in a free market not subsidized by those in our country illegally?

I think that an illegal alien criminal should never make a wage at all. They should be jailed then deported with a brand on their forehead.

The problem is that companies like Tyson chicken smuggles in 500 illegal alien criminals and then work them in an environment that is so bad that they quit and go on the dole. I have been to the emergency room in a non-Mexican neighborhood and it was full of fat women taking their ill behaved children in for well baby care. My wife was seen this last time because of my credible threat of violence.

Tyson then brings in 500 more. If the top corporate officers of these companies did about 25 years in prison this crap would stop.

Yes I think that you should be able to sell your skills for what they are worth. My skill set includes more than being able to run a weed-eater so I demand more money. A lot more money but I still mow my yard as I will not give a penny to a criminal.

From the statement the company released: "Koch Foods is committed to complying with all immigration laws, and we look forward to resolving the matter quickly."

Translation: "Oh crap, we got caught! OK, OK, we'll comply with whatever you want. Just please don't throw us in jail."

True. and if the market says houses should cost 20 more dollars a square foot because that is what US workers require to work out in the weather - then that needs to happen as well. Often unpleasant working conditions add more to the market value of a job than education required (much to my disillusionment).

The chicken plant near me (ugh!) can process 140 chickens a min. Sometimes they turn it up to 160. Sometimes down to 80.

Depending on things like ‘Who Showed Up For Work Today’! :-)
