Stage 2 Power Alert Planned For The Afternoon

AP) SACRAMENTO, Calif. California's electricity grid manager is warning that large energy consumers could lose power this afternoon because a heat wave is stressing power supplies.

The independent system operator plans to declare a minor power emergency at 2 p.m. and will increase its alert level to a Stage 2 emergency at 4 p.m.

The companies that would go dark are a mix of industrial, commercial and retail businesses that previously agreed to be the first to lose power during an emergency. In exchange, the companies receive reduced utility rates.

California has not choice but to reduce power demand because its electricity plants are running at capacity and a heat wave is stressing power systems throughout the West.

In a Stage 1 alert, which is usually issued when statewide power reserves dip below 7 percent, Californians are asked to voluntarily reduce electricity usage to avoid outages.

In a Stage 2 alert, power interruptions are triggered for customers who have volunteered to conserve when shortages are threatened.

A Stage 3 alert -- which authorities do not anticipate for Thursday -- entails rolling blackouts

What heat wave? It’s 89F here in Texas right now. It should be something like 110F, but it’s not.

Here we go again. If they turn off my power, I’ll jump in my big air-conditioned SUV and go for a drive... Unintended consequences.

You may not, but a lot of others have that attitude and it affects you...

It affects you too. Why revel in other people's misery?

The weather forecast said it would be 108 in Fresno today. We are having an unusual weather pattern and the clouds and rain have kept the temperature down. Presently the temperature is 90 degrees, and for it to reach 108 it will have to rise 18 degrees in the next three or four hours. I pray that will NOT happen!

Not really, I test the products they (utilities) use to do controlled load shedding, when the load shedding works and my products do it properly, the utilities buy more of them, so I get a bigger paycheck...

So there are no NIMBY’s in Washington State making decisions (or electing people to make decisions) that affect you?

Reducing power demand, however, is California's only choice. It cannot add power because its electricity plants are running at capacity and a heat wave is stressing power systems throughout the West.

And here I was thinking that there was another alternative.

It’s pretty hard to run out of energy when we live in a universe with an infinite quantity. But, for liberals, even infinite is inadequate.

Unintended consequences.

I guess I live too close to New Orleans... but if I lose power, I'm lootin' me a Hi-Def TV... and some Heineken.

Because Californians have brought this situation upon themselves. Californians continue to allow idiots like the environmental movement in California to have a voice in their lives in California, when the environmentalists should be brought to task and exposed for their lies and manipulation of the public agenda for a narrow-minded malthusian worldview.

If it was up to me I’d build more power plants...but what the hell do I know
