Dr. Gavriel Barkai opened by saying, "A month and a half ago, the Muslim Waqf [religious trust] began digging a trench more than 400 meters [1,300 feet] long - the largest such work ever carried out on the Temple Mount... These are criminal acts that have no place in a cultured country." "No other country in the world would allow such grave damage to its most precious archaeological treasures"
"Some man-worked stones have been found in the trench, as well as remnants of a wall that according to all our estimations, are from a structure in one of the outer courtyards in the Holy Temple. Such important work is being done without the supervision of the Antiquities Authority."

Dr. Eilat Mazar, who has long been involved in the fight to preserve the Temple Mount from unsupervised digging, said she saw Israeli policemen observing but taking no action against the dig. "Irreversible destruction is going on there," she said.
The Committee has demanded that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert (fax: 02-670-5475, or 9722-670-5475 from abroad), Jerusalem Affairs Minister Rafi Eitan (Pensioners), and the Antiquities Authority order the work stopped immediately. In addition, they demand that tractors not be allowed to work on the Mount at all, nor may any digging take place without appropriate archaeological supervision.
"The archaeological damage is many times worse," Mazar said, "in light of the fact that the ground level is only slightly above the original Temple Mount platform. And in fact, the bedrock has been uncovered in some places - meaning that earth that has been in place for many centuries, even possibly since the First Temple, has been removed."
"No other country in the world would allow such grave damage to its most precious archaeological treasures," Mazar said.
The Committee is planning to file a complaint with the police, and is considering submitting an appeal to the Supreme Court.

Olmert & crew don't give a rat's arse about religious sites (Jewish ones, that is). In fact, the more that are destroyed or turned over to Arab control, the happier they are, since it enrages the religious, whom they can't stand. Olmert is in a rush to give away Judea and Samaria, to split Jerusalem and to give up control of Temple Mount. That's worse than not caring about this issue. The police do as ordered, and the Supreme Court is a collection of corrupt Leftists who think Olmert is moving too slowly in making concessions to the Pallies.
Other than that, everything is fine, there's nothing to worry about.
It amazes and disgusts me that the people of Israel don't shut the whole place down with demonstrations and strikes until Olmerde resigns and calls for new elections.

That is the idea, followed by some Iman's proclamation that there was never a Temple there.
If I know Arabs, and I think I do, that is their primary purpose in digging.
Everywhere else but here.
*sigh*

We’ve all seen the muslim version of the preservation of antiquities when the Taliban blew up the giant statues of Buddha.
If anyone thinks this dig will be different they are profoundly stupid.
"In the time it takes for a drop of water to spill from a tipped over jug, Mohammed flew, in a dream, to El-Aksa (the furthest place). He flew on a winged horse named El-Buraq which had the face and breasts of a woman and the tail of a peacock. El-Buraq landed on the rock upon which it was believed Abraham prepared to sacrifice his son Isaac as G-d's ultimate test of Abraham's faithfulness. (The Muslims maintain that it was Ishmael, son of the Abraham's Egyptian concubine Hagar who was to sacrificed.) This giant horse was tethered for a period of time on the Rock or foundation stone of the Holy Jewish Temple, leaving a hoofprint on the Rock. Then Buraq leapt to the 7th Heaven where Mohammed purportedly met all the ancient Jewish prophets (including J...s) and received their blessings as the last Prophet of Allah. Then (in the dream) he returned to Mecca as the last authorized prophet of Allah.(6 Koran Sura 17:1)
