Former Tennessee Senator Fred Dalton Thompson may be announcing his presidential candidacy formally at 4:30 pm EDT today. A reliable source close to Thompson's advisors told HUMAN EVENTS that today would be the actual announcement, not the announcement-of-the-announcement rumored earlier.
Thompson's move may have been accelerated by the August 29 editorial in the Manchester, NH Union Leader that said Thompson's failure to participate in the scheduled September 5 debate would be a snub to New Hampshirites.
Whatever motivated Thompson, the September 5 debate - with him in it - would be much more important than it would otherwise have been.
I seem to recall on another “Fred Announces” thread a bit ago that there was plenty of big bucks riding on this.
As I recall - 8/31/07 was the “bet he doesn’t / bet he does” cut off.
Any one else remember that and the one guy who was taking all the action? He had a list of folks on at 50 clams a whack.
Bet he might be worried right about now.
Might be time for this to go in BREAKING:)
Sources: Thompson to announce Sept. 6th
Fred Thompson’s campaign-in-waiting will hold a 4 p.m. conference call today with supporters to brief them on plans for the former Tennessee senator’s presidential announcement next week, according to an e-mail obtained by Politico.com.
Randy Enwright, Thompson’s political director, said in the message that they will “discuss the next steps as we move forward as an organization.” A Thompson aide confirms that they’ll share the news about the long-awaited formal launch. “By the end of the day, we’ll have more clarity,” the aide said, declining to reveal which day the announcement would take place.
UPDATE: Still no official confirmation from the campaign, but Thompson sources now confirm that he will announce his candidacy next Thursday, Sept. 6. The launch will include a tour of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida. As expected, Thompson will not appear at the GOP debate in New Hampshire on Wednesday, Sept. 5.
Is he invited to the debate?
I’d prefer to see him at that debate.
Me too..
Redstate's saying that today's the day. The Politico is always wrong.
TOTALLY awesome..love it when the Politico is wrong:)

Maybe it’s time for BREAKING?
It’s up at Red State now too..they have been close with Fred’s people for a long time now...
So what happens if he decides it’s a “no go”?
Doubt it.
He got a fair amount of pre-announcement hype. He rode that bullet (ref. song charts for definition) as far as he could. That bullet would turn negative if he waited much longer, right now it's about stagnate. The question everyone has had if whether he could increase the bullet once he dived in. We're going to find out.
...still betting on tuesday...
Announcement of the announcement of the status.
I’m not going to get too excited until I see it from a very reliable source. If Jim Geraghty confirmed it, then I’d be more confident.
A surprise declaration now is a great move. I hope he does it.
I doubt that. He'd have had to have his duckies in a row before that editorial in order to make an announcement today.
I don't understand that attitude. He'll announce when he announces. Either his political opinions mesh with yours, and you think he's a good candidate or you don't. The timing of his announcement shouldn't have any bearing on that.
That's the verb form. In that position in the syntax you want the adjectival form: stagnative.
I think you did the right thing. This is about THE announcement. The other post is about the announcement as to when there would be an announcement. The source of the article you posted seems to announce that the announcement will, in fact, be THE annoucement. In and of itself, the “source” is supposedly announcing when the announcement will be thus taking care of the announcement made in the previous article. Gotta go get some more coffee.
Thank goodness the last kid gets picked up at four so I can glue myself to the computer.
