BRANDON, S.D. (AP) Mom's brownies and other homemade goodies have been banned from grade schools in the Brandon-Valley School District.
The ban is intended to protect kids who are allergic to nuts.
The "no shared treats" policy means no more suckers, cookies or even apples. And it means shared treats will not be allowed at Halloween, Christmas and Valentine's parties in grade-school classrooms.
School district officials say the ban will be strictly enforced.
Although the district no longer allows shared treats in elementary schools, students may bring their own snacks from home.
The ban does not apply to Brand Valley middle school and high school classes.
>>Let the kids eat their peanut butter sandwiches after school of its so vital to their lives<<
You, kid who’s parents are working poor and can’t afford much else but PB&J, skip your lunch and eat it at home.
Right.
When we make the world fool proof, only fools will live in it.
Dude Im not asking for the world this a handful of *state* owned public buildings..
>>After all because you may home school that means *everyone* can do it or they are lazy parents<<
Um, excuse me. I’m the homeschooling mom. Would you please post my quote about “lazy parents”?
It was about 6 months ago and I do not remember the brand because I threw the stuff in the trash, it was gross. Thus a waste of money.
Peanut butter is a staple in this house, that will never change. My husband is 52 and packs his lunch for work most days because it is easier as he is on the road most of the time. PB&J is frequently what he carries. I sell jellies I make, so he always has a wide variety of choices.
Gabz, have I ever called parents who send kids to PS, lazy?
(I always thought I was the “do what’s right for your kid” homeschooler)
That is such a load of crap. I'm gluten intolerant. That puts the responsibility on me to not put the stuff in my mouth. Life isn't fair. Get used to it.
NEVER!!!!!!!!!!
(I always thought I was the do whats right for your kid homeschooler)
You have been as long as I've known you.
Approximately 125 people die in the United States each year from food allergies. The majority are over 20 years old. I can’t find the source but it seems that there have been about 13 children die from nuts in the last decade. IT IS NOT A PROBLEM. WE SHOULD NOT STOP SOCIETY BECAUSE OF THE REMOTE CHANCE THAT A CHILD MAY HAVE AN ALLERGY.
Thanks.
I thought I was losing it there.
For the record, I don’t believe that parents who send their kids to PS are lazy.
However, I think that parents who knowingly send their kindergarten, first grade and second grade children into life threatening situations are nuts. No pun intended!
You are taking this far too personally and only looking at it from the standpoint of a parent with an allergic child, you are refusing to look at the situation from the point of view of the vast majority of parents without allergic children.
My concern is that all nuts are being lumped in with peanuts.
And from this site
http://www.foodallergyinitiative.com/section_home.cfm?section_id=3
Only 30,000 across the country are treated for emergency situations. And as you can see, this is from an advocacy group so the numbers may be funky. Something’s up with this.
I can't disagree with that in the least.
My daughter and her friend start 4th grade on Tuesday, I'm getting them both ready now to go to karate class.
Amen!
Lets reword your statement:
IT IS NOT A PROBLEM. WE SHOULD NOT *BAN NUTS IN A SCHOOL DISTRICT* BECAUSE OF THE REMOTE CHANCE THAT A CHILD *KNOWN TO HAVE A SEVER ALLERGY* MAY *DIE*.
Food allergies are an immune system disorder that makes it potentially fatal for affected individuals to eat foods that would be considered harmless by most. It is possible to be allergic to practically anything, but most food allergies are to proteins. Statistically most allergic reactions occur from ingesting or inhaling particles from one of the so-called “big eight” foods: peanuts, treenuts, egg, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish and dairy.
Symptoms vary widely from gastrointestinal distress, hives and itching, to more severe reactions such as anaphylaxis, which impairs breathing and/or results in a serious drop in blood pressure and can cause death within minutes of exposure and for several hours afterwards. Type and severity of symptoms cannot be predicted even after an exposure has been observed.

Dont go throwing around facts for these people. My kids private school banned peanut oil based snacks (most are by the way). They did this in a 1 hour mandatory parents meeting where we were told the horrors, the parents of this single (1) child, lectured us on how serious it is,offered to help educate us if we had further questions, they all thanked us in advance for changing our ways for the safety of their child. The principal apologized for the small inconvenience but told again we were all Christian bretheren and should understand. We walked out of that meeting in shock. Half were outraged to be lecured, some indifferent, some supported. Then..the dreaded anticipated even HAPPENED...ANYWAY. The school was shut, kids had to be picked up...Now,,,no outside snacks to be had.I guess the arrest of the childrens parents would be inconceivable. The minority leading the majority around by a nose ring. It really needs to stop.
My vaccinated child got whooping cough in school, so my argument is not extreme at all.
