Game on!" (Fair Tax Striking A Nerve)
Americans For Fair Taxation ^ | August 29, 2007 | Ken Hoagland

Posted on 08/30/2007 5:05:49 AM PDT by Man50D

Dear FairTax supporters,

Now that the FairTax has gained national attention, defenders of the income tax system have been badly shaken and have gone on the attack in the media with blatant distortions and outright lies. This is a measure of how much we are affecting the nation and a measure of how far our opponents will go to stop our progress.

We have seen positive treatment of the FairTax in the last several weeks on ABC News, CNN, Fox News, and in newspapers ranging from The Wall Street Journal to The Des Moines Register as well as in The Atlantic Monthly, National Review, and scores of political Web sites. This has motivated "income tax profiteers" to go on the warpath with a campaign of distortions and lies.

We are working hard at FairTax.org to answer each critic and to win new friends to our movement now that our cause has moved to the national stage. You can continue to do your part by writing letters to the editor, talking with elected officials and candidates, and calling in to talk shows to bring the real truth of the FairTax to the forefront. Get ready for even more distortions by those who profit from the income tax system, but keep a close eye out on the national media because more and more of our letters, guest editorials, and appearances on television and radio programs are coming.

Public policy and politics at the national level are "full contact" sports. Please know that we are all "suited up" and engaging all those who would slander the FairTax.

Ken Hoagland, National Communications Director

What is the fair tax? A sales tax rather than an income tax?

Why lie about it, the truth about the “fair tax” is abominable enough.

I support the fair tax for 2 reasons:

1. It will reduce Fed intervention in individual lives.
2. It will tax those who otherwise avoid taxes.

The weaknesses of the Fair Tax are:

1. The repeal of the income tax. It’s insane to allow a new tax for the Fed with the old tax still on the books. Like all good politicians, they’ll allow the new with a “promise” to get rid of the old. It will never happen. Then they’ll have both.

2. Congress can always grant special exemptions: we already of sales tax free exemptions with state sales taxes. There’s no reason the Fed can’t do the same.

3. Congress can play with the rate, raising and lowering it.

4. States will continue to have income taxes, property taxes, excises, air tax, life tax, breathing tax, because-we-feel-like-it tax, and a host of community taxes. The Fair Tax would be best as a coordinated effort to rid us of ALL taxes that are not taken at the cash register.

The Fair Tax Act of 2007 will replace federal income taxes with a national sales tax. The link provided will give the information about the bill(H.R.25/S.1025)

Tax issue aside, why does it read like it was written by a DU style conspiracy theorist? Sounds like it was recycled from text that used to contain the words Halliburton and Diebold.

The “Fair Tax” is an attempt to push 100% of the tax burden to individuals and letting corporations and businesses off “scott free”. The Democrats will beat that horse all the way to election day. Allegedly, items will cost less, due to the corporations tax burden already factored into the price.

“The FairTaxSM provides every American family with a rebate of the sales tax on spending up to the federal poverty level (plus an extra amount to prevent any marriage penalty). The rebate is paid monthly in advance. It allows a family of four to spend $27,380 tax free each year. The rebate for a married couple with two children is $525 per month ($6,297 annually). Therefore, no family pays federal sales tax on essential goods and services and middle-class families are effectively exempted on a large part of their annual spending.”

Nice, a progressive sales tax that doesn’t discriminate between different types of spending. Once the economy adjusted, savings would shoot up, imports would go down, and we’d have parties on April 15th instead of kicking the dog away, growling at the wife, and ignoring the children while we fill out the paperwork.

There will be some gaming by business owners who buy products tax free, declare them as “intermediates” but personally use the item. Will have to watch that. IRS will not go away but it will be only one area of the economy that is under IRS scrutiny, so less hassle for most of us. Ultimately money lands in the hands of individuals always.

Every dollar a corporation spends, whether on taxes or anything else, eventually comes out of the pockets of individuals, specifically three groups of individuals: the corporation’s shareholders, in the form of decreased capital gains and dividends; its workers, in the form of lower wages; or its customers, in the form of higher prices.

Or, more plainly stated:

All taxes on business are simply a fiction to hide the total tax burden from the consumer.

I’m not sure the Republicans can really lose a debate that focuses on taxes. They’ll beat the anti-business horse, we’ll beat the Income tax horse, and my bet is people hate the income tax more than they hate businesses.
