Schwarzenegger puzzled by Bush stance on children
San Diego Union - Tribune ^ | 8/29/07 | Bill Ainsworth

SACRAMENTO - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger expressed a new reaction Wednesday morning to one of President Bush's key policies: disbelief.

Schwarzenegger, who campaigned for Bush's re-election's in 2004, said he couldn't understand the president's threat to veto pending federal legislation that would provide new money for children's health coverage.

"When you hear decisions like that you say to yourself, ' What has happened? Why? Why would you go after children? Why would you not want to insure them?" said Schwarzenegger at a news conference promoting children's health insurance.

"We all sit there and say 'Where did that come from? You can't go wipe out the deficit on the backs of children. I mean you can't," he said.

Bush opposes bipartisan efforts in Congress to expand a children's health program that is wildly popular in the states because it provides them with a two-to-one match to cover children of the working poor. These are children whose parents make too much money to qualify for Medicaid, known as Medi-Cal in California, but not enough to afford health insurance.

California officials estimate that Bush's position could result in more than 200,000 children in California losing their health insurance.

Schwarzenegger has come out strongly in favor of expanding the program in the past, but his statements this morning were by far his strongest on the topic.

Too bad he wasn’t as considerate of the debtload that is also looming in the future for the same children to pay down for all the rampant spending under his own watch..

I'd like to ask ignorant Red Arnold whether he thinks a 25 year old "child" should continue to be supported by the taxpayers. For that and other reasons, the SCHIP bill deserves a big fat presidential veto. I get pleasure out of seeing liberals all upset at the prospect. Its music to my ears!

Ah-nold, you can’t just vote for everything that sounds good without thinking about the fiscal and moral impact of such a law.

Wouldn’t it be nice to give $20 trillion to poor nations in Africa? Why would you be against that? It would obviously save hundreds of millions of people, especially children there.

Come on, Ah-nold. Why aren’t you for this?

Stupid liberal RINO.

while I don’t agree with Arnie’s stance...Bush is not very consistent.

It is Bush’s policy that all elderly - even the very wealthy- should have prescription drugs given to them courtesy of the taxpayers.

It seems poor children are not as important as wealthy elderly.

Oh yeah...the kids can’t vote.

I agree, it’s hard to follow the methods to the madness of many of today’s elected eladers.

Bush thought when he came in that he could triangulate the liberals by stealing their issues. He did that with prescription drugs only it did not work the way he planned.

The liberals would still hate him if he appeased them. If he learned anything, its that being nice to the Left doesn't win you their praise. It only makes them hate you even more.

Schwarzenegger puzzled by Bush stance on children

Like for example, Bush considerably more likely to insist they be born alive and ultimately strive to pay their own way?

"When you hear decisions like that you say to yourself, ' What has happened? Why? Why would you go after children? Why would you not want to insure them?"

Maybe he found his spankin'-fresh, never-before-seen-daylight copy of the Constitution that someone gave him on Inaugural Day 2001, and saw no authorization for such things.

Probably it was sitting in a forgotten drawer next to his dusty, cobweb'd veto pen.

I found it prudent to cancel the Health coverage I was getting through my wifes work. Seems we paid more annually into the system than they would pay any given year I needed the coverage.

Say I became ill with something they deem as acceptable to be ill with, they would pay up to ‘X’ amount per year of the cost, but WE would continue paying them the extraordinary amount of money only to surpass that of which they are committed to imburse the caregiver that particular year. So...I didn’t see any reason to continue giving money to these people as there wasn’t anything but cost, and I’d still be sick beyond that which they would pay until the following year if you follow any of this.

The point is that it is best to do all you can do to be healthy actually. Drink milk, eat your vegies, keep your elbows off the table, all that sort of thing.

Bush wanted to help the “poor” on Medicare get cheaper drugs. The Democrats in Congress wanted everyone to get it so they could expand their Socialist agenda. Bush caved, figuring he got “something” like he originally proposed during his campaign. You know, the new tone and all.
Remember GORE hugging the old lady who walked the streets collecting cans to pay for her meds? The old lady with the millionaire son? She did’t want his help because the Gubment owed her because she lived so long.

Democrats have learned the way to frighten conservatives into silence is to depict them as being against "the children." No politician wants to look like a Scrooge with the kids.
