Many see the NRA as just another list of gun owners. So why put your name on a list like that? Someday it could fall into the wrong hands.

The coward who won’t fight when the fighting is easy certainly won’t fight when it gets difficult.
Any government entity that wants to know, already knows I'm a gun owner. My CCW would be their first clue. A trivial exercise would be to have the Post Office compile a list of addresses where gun mags are delivered to.
My main objection to the NRA is that they're wusses
The government has been busily and illegally compiling lists of gun owners for years, especially since the NICS was instituted. Also, they illegally compile receipts from CC companies using computers to search for ammo, gun parts, and other shooting accessory purchases. Believe me, they know how many and what caliber guns you have and how much you shoot.
