Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) was arrested in June at a Minnesota airport by a plainclothes police officer investigating lewd conduct complaints in a mens public restroom, according to an arrest report obtained by Roll Call Monday afternoon.
Craigs arrest occurred just after noon on June 11 at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. On Aug. 8, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct in the Hennepin County District Court. He paid more than $500 in fines and fees, and a 10-day jail sentence was stayed. He also was given one year of probation with the court that began on Aug. 8.
A spokesman for Craig described the incident as a he said/he said misunderstanding, and said the office would release a fuller statement later Monday afternoon.
After he was arrested, Craig, who is married, was taken to the Airport Police Operations Center to be interviewed about the lewd conduct incident, according to the police report. At one point during the interview, Craig handed the plainclothes sergeant who arrested him a business card that identified him as a U.S. Senator and said, What do you think about that? the report states.
Craig was detained for approximately 45 minutes, interviewed, photographed, fingerprinted and released, and police prepared a formal complaint for interference with privacy and disorderly conduct.
According to the incident report, Sgt. Dave Karsnia was working as a plainclothes officer on June 11 investigating civilian complaints regarding sexual activity in the mens public restroom in which Craig was arrested.
Airport police previously had made numerous arrests in the mens restroom of the Northstar Crossing in the Lindbergh Terminal in connection with sexual activity.
Karsnia entered the bathroom at noon that day and about 13 minutes after taking a seat in a stall, he stated he could see an older white male with grey hair standing outside my stall.
The man, who lingered in front of the stall for two minutes, was later identified as Craig.
I could see Craig look through the crack in the door from his position. Craig would look down at his hands, fidget with his fingers, and then look through the crack into my stall again. Craig would repeat this cycle for about two minutes, the report states.
Craig then entered the stall next to Karsnias and placed his roller bag against the front of the stall door.
My experience has shown that individuals engaging in lewd conduct use their bags to block the view from the front of their stall, Karsnia stated in his report. From my seated position, I could observe the shoes and ankles of Craig seated to the left of me.
Craig was wearing dress pants with black dress shoes.
At 1216 hours, Craig tapped his right foot. I recognized this as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct. Craig tapped his toes several times and moves his foot closer to my foot. I moved my foot up and down slowly. While this was occurring, the male in the stall to my right was still present. I could hear several unknown persons in the restroom that appeared to use the restroom for its intended use. The presence of others did not seem to deter Craig as he moved his right foot so that it touched the side of my left foot which was within my stall area, the report states.
Craig then proceeded to swipe his hand under the stall divider several times, and Karsnia noted in his report that I could ... see Craig had a gold ring on his ring finger as his hand was on my side of the stall divider.
Karsnia then held his police identification down by the floor so that Craig could see it.
With my left hand near the floor, I pointed towards the exit. Craig responded, No! I again pointed towards the exit. Craig exited the stall with his roller bags without flushing the toilet. ... Craig said he would not go. I told Craig that he was under arrest, he had to go, and that I didnt want to make a scene. Craig then left the restroom.
In a recorded interview after his arrest, Craig either disagreed with me or didnt recall the events as they happened, the report states.
Craig stated that he has a wide stance when going to the bathroom and that his foot may have touched mine, the report states. Craig also told the arresting officer that he reached down with his right hand to pick up a piece of paper that was on the floor.
It should be noted that there was not a piece of paper on the bathroom floor, nor did Craig pick up a piece of paper, the arresting officer said in the report.
On Aug. 8, the day he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in the Minnesota court, Craig appeared via satellite at a ceremony that took place in Idaho in which former Idaho federal Judge Randy Smith was invested into his new position as a judge on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
In October 2006, Craigs office publicly denied allegations that he was a homosexual made on a gay activist Web site blogactive.com. Craigs office told the Spokane Spokesman-Review that the charge was completely ridiculous, saying that the allegations had no basis in fact.
Steven T. Dennis contributed to this report.
The 10 days was "stayed" most likely "held" unless/until there was another related charge within the next year or some designated by the court time-frame. The fact that he pleaded guilty for this charge is the telling issue. He obviously felt culpable and believed he would have been convicted on the charge if it went to trial. While not compelled to do so he also would have had to testify in his own defense, and was reluctant to do so for whatever reasons. I can imagine the questions: "Have you ever had sex in a public restroom with another man?" etc.
“Do you ride side-saddle, or astride?” -— Heathcliff in “Wuthering Heights.”
How many have you asked? Just askin' here.
Wasn’t “Sea Bass” the trucker the one who was trolling in that film?
Four or five - I used to live in Seattle. Had plenty of gay friends, and most of them think public restroom sex is disgusting too.
Apparently, Craig has been reportedly having same sex affairs for years.
New thread, Craig’s ridiculous statement: ‘http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1887436/posts';
Jay Leno will be happy.
Thanks for the ping. It certainly was a carefully worded statement, wasn’t it?
I believe she may have hung out at the “gay” spots later in her life or maybe even peformed there or was friendly to homosexuals.
Her death in the late 60’s is linked with gay riots in New York.
Disgusting. His poor wife.
He pleaded guilty. Enough said.
I’m guessing the GI is just following orders from his CO. After all, someone has to volunteer to be photographed with the Senator. My guess? No volunteers, so they drew straws.
Craig is married and has three adopted children from his wife’s previous marriage.
This was a part of his Wikipedia entry:
“According to CNN and NNDB On 17 October 2006, gay activist Mike Rogers wrote on his blog, “I have done extensive research into this case, including trips to the Pacific Northwest to meet with men who have say they have physical relations with the Senator. I have also met with a man here in Washington, D.C., who says the same — and that these incidents occurred in the bathrooms of Union Station. None of these men know each other, or knew that I was talking to others. They all reported similar personal characteristics about the Senator, which lead me to believe, beyond any doubt, that their stories are valid.”
Skip the giblet "gravey". Blackbird.
Senator Larry Craig (R-ID) has been an ID Senator for several terms, and has also been on the NRA board of directors for several years. He's one of the staunchest defenders of 2nd Amendment rights in either house of Congress, and has been responsible for stopping quire a few antigun bills before they got to the Senate floor. I would really hate to know that he's a homo IF this report is legit.
Personally, I wouldn't put it past his bitter enemies in the gun-grabbing crowd to set him up with the help of liberal, anti-gun Minneapolis city officials and a paid off cop. This incident will probably end his career in the Senate whether it was a good arrest or not. I believe that the anti-gunners would have had him "accidentally" killed years ago if they thought they could get away with it. Even if the incident went down like it was reported, given his great value to the pro-gun cause and conservative issues of all kinds I would still support him for the Senate if I lived in ID. The one sure thing that will cause me to drop any politician no matter how valuable he or she is to conservative, pro-gun, pro-life, pro-national defense causes is for he or she to vote for a pro-abortion bill or otherwise support the abortion mill industry.
With democrats it’s a PLUS to be named a homosexual and to try and have sex in a bathroom.
Wizard of Oz is THE favorite gay movie of all time, just like Over the Rainbow is the unofficial Gay theme song.
How do I KNOW this?I used to live a block away from Castro and Market St in SF from 1973-1979,so I became very familiar with the whole”gay thing”When Wizard would play at The Castro Theatre occasionally, the place was packed.Liza Minelli even appeared there a few times and the gay crowd went bonkers in tribute of her mom.
Oh,and to all you cynics out there,I was with a WOMAN during that whole mad adventure in San Fran.So keep your nasty thoughts to yourself!
What a world we live in.
That’s all. I’m really without speech.
