Attorney General Gonzales Resigns Controversy Plagued Top Law Enforcement Official By PIERRE THOMAS, JASON RYAN, THERESA COOK and JACK DATE Aug. 27, 2007
Gonzales will hold a press conference at 10:30 a.m. at the Justice Department to announce the resignation; President Bush is also expected to make a statement at 11:30 a.m.
*snip* The embattled attorney general had withstood months of criticism from both sides of the aisle in Congress for a variety of missteps. Lawmakers blasted Gonzales after his department fired at least nine U.S. attorneys last year and accused him of misusing terrorist surveillance programs. Most recently Democrats charged that Gonzales had repeatedly lied to Congress under oath.
Throughout Gonzales' sometimes rocky tenure, President Bush had defended him in recent months, accusing his detractors of playing politics. The New York Times reported Friday that Gonzales submitted his resignation to the president by phone Friday morning.
Bush has yet to announce a replacement for the attorney general position, but the Associated Press reports a likely temporary replacement for Gonzales is Solicitor General Paul Clement, according to a senior department official.
There are also reports that Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff will be named as a successor to Gonzales.
Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards reacted to the news of Gonzales' resignation with a statement that read: "Better late than never."
Fired U.S. Attorneys Tension between Gonzales and Congress ratcheted up this spring after details began emerging about last year's federal prosecutor firings. Gonzales' chief of staff and the department's White House liaison, who later admitted to having little prosecutorial experience themselves, were heavily involved in constructing the list of prosecutors to dismiss.

“Don’t let the screen door hit you on the way out. Cordially.”
Thank you.
I thought ignoring that person was the best thing to do. But since you broke the sound barrier, I thought I would join in.
About Lucianne Goldberg (sp?): She took advantage of Jim Robinson to form her own website. She was too chicken to post and had some other pendejos post for her.
Her obese, fat slob of a son who made no sense when he started writing columns, had some awful things to say about FR.
Whenever I see “Jonathan Goldberg,” I skip his column and get angry all over again to this day. This means in some sense he won if he manages to gets me angry every time.
gets = get.
I’m telling you...Just thinking about these two jerks I get so angry I can’t see straight.
There was the perjury to cover up something that was totally legal. I saw the hearings, someone was lying.
and I suspect this will result in a really bad precedent.
I really hate the Dims winning, but the administration did bring this upon itself. Complete honesty and openness in the beginning could have left the Dims without a vehicle for their petty politicking.
Im not necessarily a Gonzales fan
As I've said before, since Gonzales was in I was ashamed that I didn't appreciate AG Ashcroft a lot more. I didn't know how good we had it.
Gonzales IS a RINO who can go to hell as far as I'm concerned.
Just because someone has an "R" next to his name doesn't mean we should blindly defend them. Gonzales brought this on himself with his pitiful Senate testimony where he was so incompetent that I'm surprised he was able to "recall" his own name, given that he couldn't "recall" anything else he's ever done.
Sorry you think half a dozen prominent conservative leaders are "RINOs" for pointing that out to you. Tom Coburn is more conservative than Alberto will ever be.
"This wouldn't have happened"? Spare me the thought. Maybe you love the idea of having Gonzales around until Jan. 2009 so he can continue to let criminals skate free, refuse to enforce our laws, and prosecute innocent people. As for the rest of America, affirmative-action stooge Gonzales' departure couldn't come fast enough.
When the enemy is beating us to a bloody pulp, we rush in to get a few kicks in to punish him for not fighting back, lol!
Amazing to witness.
>now the Rats are already crowing that theyve achieved a victory of some sort
They have. and you are right. Its not a good thing.
OMG they currently show that on RIGHT ON Bravo TV Godfather 2 LOLOLOL!
AMF (one translation of which is Adios . . . My Friend)
Adios muchacho!
Good riddance.
Thank God.
Alberto is yet another example of the insanity which lies behind any and all Affirmative Action appointments to key positions.
This man was a continuing embarrassment.
Mr Bush is really considering Skeletor as the next AG? Why? Hasn’t he screwed up Homeland Security enough to give Dubya a hint that Skeletor is a bozo? For the love of God Dubya, please nominate someone credible!!!
Exactly.
When, I wonder, are the guys on our team actually going to stop acting like they should apologize for being a Republican? They attack their own faster than the Rats do just so they can save face at not being on the MSM’s “bad guys” list?
It’s funny, Democrats joke about being a circular firing squad. It seems our side prefers just to pull a bunch of grenade pins to avoid any chance of missing each other.
All I know is its not working, hasn’t worked in 30 years, so why continue.
It would be different if this martyrdom scenario actually produced good candidates, reps, policies and wins.
