Early in the pre-campaign for the 2008 White House, New York ex-Mayor Giuliani was regarded by those who hate him as one of those gaudy soap bubbles that survives just long enough for you to yell to your brother to hurry on into the bathroom and take a look; but you're confident it will pop and leave a little moist remembrance on the white tile floor without you needing to blow it or poke it.
That was many months ago, and far from popping, the Giuliani candidacy is gaining, sinking mud-cleats into solid political support and grabbing traction. Why? I think I know. And if I'm right it will be the first time I've really learned from history. Never too late.

As Reagan would say 50% is better than nothing... The younger people will have the say in 2012.. Rudy would never have gotten elected in NYC without being liberal.. I moved out of NY in 1981 and never looked back.. Rudy improved the city but the rest of the state is in the dumps.. I live upstate..
Someone who calls himself “Ol’ Sparky” has a huge posting in this thread.
The Left is crossing their fingers it will be Mayor Giuliani.
If somehow Rudy gets the nod from the Convention, he'll take the "moderates," the Conservatives will go vote for somebody else, or stay home. We'll be "Perotized" again!
My prejudices: I should tell you that IMHO, nobody in the Republican pre-season line-up is a national winner. I sincerely recommend that the genetic damage that passes for a Republican National Committee might benefit by starting a "Dark Horse" search.
Take a look at General Petraeus. Please.
Good Lord, what nonsense
Carter and Clinton were exciting white men?
Clinton was only exciting to people on their knees
RG is exciting?? To whom? Brooklyn?
Dear Lord, he is a NE clown.
Clinton will demolish Rudy. - I will vote for him if he is the candidate, but she is going to eat his lunch.
Of course you would — Paul is a surrender monkey.
Sure Rudy can’t beat Hildebeast in NY state. No Republican is going to beat
her there, home of the largest plantation in the USA. NY city is infested by
three voting groups that will vote 95%, 90% and 85% democratic no matter
what.
Whichever of the three,Fred,Mitt,or Rudy, gets the nomination will not
have a prayer of winning NY state. So What. Bush never took it.
I want Fred to get the nomination but that does not change the fact that
Rudy gets an A in the two stands that count this cycle. That’s why he is at
>30% right now.
“Bush won the last 2 times because THEY ran boring white males.”
Good point. Charisma, elan, whatever you want to call it, is going to be important in this election.
“”A cross-dresser in the Whitehouse? You’re right, that’s not as boring as a regular family guy.””
He also blurted out some weird sexual stuff recently. Rudy was discussing his life in the early sixties saying something about the first Rolling Stones concert, when he blurted out “but I date myself”, so there you are.
You're pro-life but willing to sell out your pro-life beliefs? and support someone that has supported taxpayer-funding for abortion and spoken before NARAL? You're conservative but willing to vote for a liberal that promises to defend our nation?
No wonder conservatism can't make any progress...
Hes got a whole bunch of primaries where the only voters are registered Republicans. He's gonna have to get lucky (ie Thompson et al will have to collapse, IMO)
Lady - and keep in mind I loosely call you that - you ain't got nothing to say to me.
The author pretends that terrorism is a reason why people will support Giuliani, but terrorism is really a reason why people will not support Giuliani. One of the September 11 hijackers was pulled over for a traffic violation several in early 2001. The police officer saw that he was an illegal alien, but he let the hijacker go because no one took illegal immigration seriously. There was a very lax attitude towards people being in this country illegally, and one of the political leaders who cheered this attitude was Rudy Giuliani. He's not a solution to the terrorism threat. He's a part of the problem.
While the terrorists are unlikely to resort to more personal attacks against individuals, big threats drive people to take measures to increase their personal security. When I arrived home on September 11, I checked my guns even though nothing would suggest that I would ever need to shoot a terrorist. When people think of being threatened and being scared, they are not going to turn to a man who has said on national TV that private citizens should not be allowed to own handguns.
Rudy Giuliani cannot win the election. He can sometimes look good for a few minutes during a debate, but many conservatives hate him as much as we hate any Democrat. He is a liberal extremist on issues such as abortion and gun control. If he were a true moderate, maybe we could support him, but he's not. If he is nominated, the Republican party will collapse. The Democrats will not only win the presidency but they will also win a huge number of seats in Congress as many conservative voters simply refuse to vote on election day.
The absolute stupidest thing that the party could do is nominate Rudy Giuliani. I think the party is smart enough not to nominate Giuliani, and the writer's interpretation of the current situation is wrong. The Republican voters have had plenty of time to look at Giuliani. He's been running all year, and people know who he is and where he stands. There's a group of about 25% of Republicans who support him, but that group isn't growing. "Undecided" is still where most Republicans are, and if Giuliani had a good chance of winning these voters, he would have won them by now.
The voters have looked at John McCain and decided that he's not getting a chance at the nomination. He's falling in the polls and will not be in the "top tier" when people begin voting next year. Conservatives are waiting to see whether a second tier candidate rises to make a challenge or whether they will have to choose between Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson.
Bill
I'm part of "the base" as well, and I'll vote third party of Giuliani is nominated. I don't like the Democrats, but I'll do whatever it takes to keep the Republican party from being the party of a liberal extremist on guns and abortion. If that happens, we'll have two parties that are extreme left parties, and the rest of us will have to build a third party to represent our views.
Ditto!
ROFLOL! If the Republican party's nominee is a flaming liberal, most conservatives will recognize that the Republican party has betrayed them and joined the Democrats in their total abandonment of the republic the Founders gave us; not the other way around. If you're a liberal Republican wanting your teeny little Gerald Ford, pre-Reagan, minority party returned to you before it vanishes like the Whigs, don't blame me. Take a look at the "spoiled brat," in the mirror, determined to destroy Reagan's party, who insisted on making a Rockefeller Republican (or should I say a Jacob Javits Republican) the nominee.
I'm a conservative and I really don't give a crap what becomes of your precious Republican party once it ceases to be the vehicle that conservatives use to move their agenda. I don't owe ANY party my vote, and I don't EVER vote for Liberals regardless of the letter after their name.
If that's the case, then it will be President B. Hussein Obama. He's the only one on either side who has the girls' hearts aflutter. In fact, I think many of those GOOD Republican "girls" who used to post here will be just as happy voting for him, perhaps happier, if Rudy is NOT the Republican nominee.
Sorry, I just wouldn’t feel right about working to ensure 40 years of liberal rule.
