SAN ANTONIO A congressman who has been an outspoken critic of illegal immigration called for the removal Friday of the Border Patrol's chief in Laredo, saying his recent comments about the role of the agency make him unfit for the job.
Rep. Tom Tancredo, a Colorado Republican and long-shot presidential candidate, said Carlos X. Carrillo's remarks in a town hall meeting were "diametrically opposed" to the Border Patrol's mission. Carrillo spoke Aug. 15 in Laredo, a border community intimately connected by commerce and family with Nuevo Laredo, Mexico.
At the meeting, Carrillo said, "The Border Patrol's job is not to stop illegal immigrants. The Border Patrol's job is not to stop narcotics ... The Border Patrol's mission is not to stop criminals. The Border Patrol's mission is to stop terrorists and terrorist weapons from entering this country."
In a letter to the editor published in the Laredo Morning Times three days later, Carrillo sought "to fully explain" his comments, saying the agency's job historically has been to protect the nation's homeland by detecting and apprehending people or contraband coming in illegally.
Tancredo, who says he was contacted by concerned Border Patrol agents and others, said the explanation doesn't address concerns that Carrillo is minimizing the need to stop all illegal immigrants. Carrillo has headed the sector covering 171 river miles since October.
"He has established a clear attitude in regard to what the Border Patrol is supposed to be about, and it is diametrically opposed to what the Border Patrol is supposed to do," said Tancredo, who believes the comments reflect an attitude among some that illegal immigrants seeking jobs are harmless.
"You have to stop everyone, or at least as many as you can, who is coming into the country illegally," he said.
Calls seeking comment from Carrillo and Border Patrol officials in Washington were not immediately returned.
Funny how they call Tancredo a long shot but not McCain.
If you can not stop the illegals and the drug criminals you damn sure can not stop the terrorists.
If he believes this then what was the BP mission prior to the terrorist threat in the years past?
Is everyone in charge in the BP hispanic, I wonder how many non hispanics are in leadership positions.
It is all of those things. The Border Patrol existed before terror became a focus. Why? To patrol our borders! Thus the name.
Either this gentleman is hopelessly confused, he believes he gets to decide his own mission independent of his superiors, or (and after listening to Michael Chertoff I would not discount this) his superiors also need to be fired and replaced.
The Border Patrol does not exist to welcome illegal immigrants to the United States. It exists to find them and send their lawbreaking a**es back to where they are legal.
“While the traditional mission of the Border Patrol has always been the detection and prevention of the illegal entry of aliens and smuggling of illegal contraband into the United States anywhere other than a designated port-of-entry, the dawn of the age of terrorism within our nation added a new priority mission: to detect and prevent the entry of terrorists and their weapons into the United States.”
BP Ping!

There you have it folks.....good lord...we are so screwed...
Señor Carrillo is only repeating the lack of border control philosophy of his commander in chief. Maybe he wasnt supposed to go public with it but El Presidente has this policy in place.
Obviously, Carillo is not a multi-tasker.
Somebody needs to explain to him that all of those things he isn’t worrying about cause more deaths and economic and cultural damage every year in America than terrorists have managed in the last 30 years on American soil.
We need to do something similar to the AIDS quilt that went across the country, only the squares represent the Americans killed by illegals. We need to put it all together visually for all to see the horrible impact.
The man is just parroting what he knows his ultimate bosses, the Bush administration, wants.
Yep, that is what he said in Zapata. We attended a community Border Patrol meeting for the area (which is in the Laredo sector)on August the 7th.
We(Mike and I) thought it a very strange comment to make. And needless to say,it was upsetting.
He (Carrillo) also had the nerve to tell a women that we should be sleeping better in our homes because of the increase in BP agents for that area.
Bunch of Bravo Sierra is what it is.
I begged to differ with Carrillo as did Sheriff Sigi Gonzalez.
Wonder what our govt is up to now?

Life may not be what you wished for, but while you are here you might as well dance.
I advocate dividing illegal immigration and the terrorist threat, in that there is a solution to the latter problem not available to the former.
That is, if we can keep out the *vast majority* of Mexican illegal aliens, it will solve *most* of *that* problem. So what we need there is to figure out what are the most cost effective ways of keeping out *most* of them. 60% here, maybe another 20% there. Pretty soon it’s just a trickle.
However, we want to keep out or arrest 100% of terrorists, every single terrorist. Which on the surface seems to be an almost impossible thing to do. But there is a way to do this that wouldn’t work with ordinary Mexican illegals.
What I propose is that we pay Mexicans a BOUNTY for every non-Mexican who tries to illegally enter the US from Mexico.
Just a tiny amount of money as far as we are concerned, maybe $100-$500 for an ordinary non-Mexican, and up to $50,000 for a wanted and dangerous terrorist.
North of the border, that isn’t a fantastic amount of money, but South of the border, it is like winning the Powerball lottery jackpot.
How could a terrorist possibly get across the border with tens of thousands of hungry eyes watching him, knowing that with a single phone call they might, by their standards, become rich? Paid in cash so their own corrupt government can’t steal it from them.
And yet, if you think about it, it is even cheap enough for a single rich American to set up, and by doing so, stop dead any terrorist trying to enter the US from Mexico.
Easy as pie to set up. Just pass out leaflets in Mexico with a phone number on it. If you see a non-Mexican trying to sneak across the border, call that number and give them a place where the non-Mexican is crossing. In exchange, you get a seven digit code number. If they are caught and are worth it, YOU WIN! You just give the code number to the agent with the money, and you get paid in US dollars or New Pesos, whatever you want. And nobody knows but you.
Not ironically, even mules who are paid huge sums of money by terrorists to sneak them across the border will take their money, and then turn them in. It’s an old custom.
So yes, no matter what we do, it is still going to take years to slow then stop Mexicans from illegally entering the United States.
But we can stop terrorists starting NEXT WEEK, and for just a tiny amount of money, compared to everything else the government does. And the best part is that it doesn’t even need to be done by the government.
Heck, if we wanted to, we could probably raise enough cash to do it ourselves. Lots of people would be more than happy to kick in to a BOUNTY fund to stop terrorists.
It would probably make the government mad as hell, too.
Just on principle. Because if we get a positive ID on some terrorist entering the US, they just can’t “catch and release” him, on his promise that he will be good and go to court to be deported. Which is what they typically do, unless they have a warrant out on him.
ping. Tanc ping. I notice sittinyonder hasn’t been around for a week. NYC Republican, do you know who has the Tanc pinglist?
Heck, I didn’t even get a kiss, did you?
“We need to do something similar to the AIDS quilt that went across the country, only the squares represent the Americans killed by illegals. We need to put it all together visually for all to see the horrible impact.”
Let’s do it. I can quilt. Who else? I’m serious. Let’s do something. We can get the advertising for it from all the immigration groups. One section (or quilt - there are thousands since 9/11) for children, one for LEO’s etc.

Apparently Carrillo is not the only BP to feel this way. We have 30 million illegals to make the case.
They do this every four years. I have seen it without fail for the last 30. THEY decide which candidates they want to win and which ones not to win. And then THEY report the news with their personal dimension, saying “this one is in the lead” or “this one does not have a chance”. It is very insulting to the voters because they have not spoken yet. I have never seen that in most advanced nations’ press. Only in the USA.
Thanks, I rather like that, any idea who originally said it?
