Me telling something to help others

This happened to a good friend of mine.
She got a legitimate looking email from her ISP with a phone number to call to clarify a billing problem.
She called the 800 number on the email and the person answered "ISP billing line John Doe speaking"
And she clarified her information thinking this is the real 800 number.
WRONG! Luckily she found out what was going on before she lost a lot of money.
It's the latest trick of the scammers. Anyone can get an 800 number. They send out spam emails with these 800 numbers and have some people answering and claim to be whatever they are faking today. A few days later the number is disconnected.
If you ever get an email about an account and while it looks suspicious you have some doubts that it might be accurate so you think of calling do not call the number on the email.
Call 800 directory assistance to get the proper number.
800-555-1212.
Sorry to bother everyone. But if one person is kept from falling for this stuff because they read this it is worth it.

Also, everyone, a good place for looking up phone numbers you're curious about, especially those used by telemarketers, is

This story isn’t true. I urge you to call my 800 number and, for $19.95, I’ll tell you the real story.

I had an email from ebay; it was a fraud.
Never reply to an email or phone number or address that is provided within the communication. Look up the real information before acting.

Long story short - never give out personal info based on ANYTHING in an unsolicited email. Ever. For any reason.

Exactly. And watch out for our friends from Nigeria.

I keep getting letters from some group called the IRS. They claim I owe them thousands of dollars. Don’t fall for that one either.

I bought something on eBay. Used Paypal. When you use Paypal, it takes a few different pages to complete your transaction. Right in the middle of the legitimate Paypal pages, up popped a page that looked exactly like the Paypal format. Looked legit. My bank called me about a week later to inform me that my credit card number had come up on a list of stolen card numbers. I lost no money, but had to sweat it out until my quarterly income tax, ans state property tax, checks cleared my account.

I get messages over my TV suggesting I give to God...
Funny thing is, they keep giving out their own address.

I also only pay with Postal Money Orders. I inform the eBay seller before my first bid. If he won’t accept PMOs, I don’t bid. Their loss, not mine!

IRS, I know that mob outfit.
Opened a business once and they did an audit on me. Didn’t care one bit what I was doing, how I was doing it, and if it was legal or not. Just didn’t care.
All they wanted was their self-declared cut of the profit.
Exactly like the Gambino boys.
Said, if’n I didn’t pay up, day was gonna put da squeeze on me...the more I payed them the more they wanted. They're a rough gang.
