‘One-state recession’ hampers Michigan (4-month old article)

The drumbeat of bad economic news out of Michigan keeps pounding.

The Great Lakes State has lost jobs for six consecutive years, Michigan’s longest run of workplace shrinkages since the Great Depression. Automakers are laying off tens of thousands. Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer is closing up shop in Ann Arbor and Kalamazoo. The state ranks among the top three in the country for home foreclosures and mortgage delinquencies.

Analysts at Comerica Bank, which is moving its headquarters from Detroit to Dallas, say Michigan is stuck in a “one-state recession.”

I just lost my largest client. I’ve got a dozen clients, and only one is profitable right now.

I'd vote for him before I would socialist Granholm.

But yes, he should fire Matt Millen already.

The problem with Michigan is that we are entrepreneur hostile. The majority of jobs don’t come from big companies but from small ones and especially from startups. The SBT kills any desire for a small business may have to move to Michigan and it is choking the ones we have. You may have made no profit at all in a year but you still will owe this value added tax.
Add in the labor problems caused by not having a right to work law and we are up a creek with nary a paddle in sight.

“In my opinion, our downward slide began under Carter and has only been halted a couple of times.”

It started after WW2. Look at the Wiki for the 12th Street Riots (which I’ve contributed tons of effort) and you’ll see that Detroit alone has lost over 1 million people.

The labor there is anti-business. Of course you might still turn it around by being small-business oriented where labor doesn’t matter so much.

“Well..of the two I’d have to say the govenor’s idea makes more sense if it was done well but what’s really needed is a Right to Work law.”

Our Communist Governor’s only plan is to waste more money on the teachers union. She is too stupid to breathe and would die if it wasn’t a reflex reaction!

Once the start-up gets on track it'll just move away from Michigan.

I have to agree, the state Republican's are just as worthless, economically speaking, as the Dems. They have yet to meet a spending project they didn't like (unless the Gov proposed it first, then they decry it for a year before signing on to it)

Throw in the 38%!!!! raise they gave themselves at the same time state employees were looking being told they were going to be working for free four hours each pay period, and I really have no use for them. The next time I vote for an incumbent from either party for state office, it will be the one that gets the automatic raises reversed.

Thank you. bkepley is right in that it is not necessarily the tax rate, in fact if it was a tax on business profits it would be rather low. But this is a tax on business income, employee wages and business property rent payments.

Add in that the SBT is such a complicated tax that you really do need an accountant to do it right and you have effectively made it very unattractive to start a business in Michigan.

Yes, I have said many times, the regulatory environment in MI is insane. Only an idiot would open a business there.

MI’s Solution? Raise taxes.

Do you see a problem? I do.

don’t forget the Mi Supreme Ct, dominated by Repubs, that likes to legislate from the bench and has never heard of Stare Decisis. Repubs had their hands in this mess longer than the Canuck has be around.

The other Liberal Laboratory is New Orleans LA. Another great example of a chocolate city, where the sport is Murder. Want to bet that Tourists are going to avoid the place? And the Levies are still not in good order. Idiots in Both places. Well as Ron White says “You can’t fix Stupid”>

Matt Millen does a better job running the Detroit Lions than Michigan politicians run their State. Did you’d ever think Matt Millen’s performance could be looked at in a positive light? Just compare him to how Michigan is run.

I guess your Muslims are better than the Muslims in the nabe I lived in Brooklyn, whose stores/restaurants were frequently closed by the BOH, while their obnoxious male children ran around like thug gangsta wannabes, and ruining the quality of life.

“I guess your Muslims are better than the Muslims in the nabe I lived in Brooklyn, whose stores/restaurants were frequently closed by the BOH, while their obnoxious male children ran around like thug gangsta wannabes, and ruining the quality of life.”

I’m not saying that they’re perfect. I’m just saying that they come here and work.

First, yeah, the code of the road in the “old country” always seemed to be that unless the gov’t caught you, it wasn’t illegal. That is a real culture thing that has to be overcome.

Second, the “thug gangsta wannabes” are here too. Most of them have no memory of their parents country. They reject their parent’s moral code, but then don’t have a clue that they have to follow anyone else’s. Usually they outgrow it, and their male relatives usually hit them upside the head when they get too bad (I’ve seen it w/ my own eyes). Give them another generation and, like the Irish, Jews, Italians, et al before them, they’ll get the hint.
