I’m curious—since Canada has a rapidly declining population, (a tiny fraction of ours) and since we already handle most of the national defense responsibilities for Canada, does anyone here think that we may be setting the stage for Canada to become a part of the United States, rather than the US becoming a part of some “NAU” entity?
If Canada were to enter the union as several states, under our Constitution, would anyone here object?

Canadian population (thousands), 2001 31,021, 2002 32,373, 2003 31,669, 2004 31,974 and 2005 32,270. How is that rapidly declining?

I bet lots of people here would object to having a state whose head of state is Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II! :)
The problem isn’t Canada, it is Mexico, and the huge disparity of wealth between the U.S. and Canada on one side, and Mexico on the other. There is one big reason why the EU has not admitted Turkey, and that is the disparity of wealth. Unless you want more than half of the Mexican population moving here, and more than half have said they would if they could, then a union between the three countries that includes free movement of labor probably isn’t your cup of tea.
You could include Mexico, too (after a lot of work to bring the former up to some sort of parity with other states).
