The problem isn’t Canada, it is Mexico, and the huge disparity of wealth between the U.S. and Canada on one side, and Mexico on the other. There is one big reason why the EU has not admitted Turkey, and that is the disparity of wealth. Unless you want more than half of the Mexican population moving here, and more than half have said they would if they could, then a union between the three countries that includes free movement of labor probably isn’t your cup of tea.

Even between the United States and Canada, there is about a $10,000 (American) disparity--though with the Canadian dollar close to matching the American one, this probably is changing.

And Canadians pay a lot of taxes.
