UK more suspicious of Muslims than America and rest of EU By Daniel Dombey in London and Simon Kuper in Paris

Britons are more suspicious of Muslims than Americans and other Europeans, according to a poll for the Financial Times.

Only 59 per cent of Britons thought it possible to be both a Muslim and a citizen of their country, a smaller proportion than in France, Germany, Spain, Italy or the US - the other countries polled by Harris Interactive.

British citizens were also the most likely to predict a "major terrorist attack" in their country in the next 12 months; consider Muslims "a threat to national security", and believe Muslims had too much political power in their country.

However, on more personal measures of integration - having Muslim friends and accepting the marriage of their child to a Muslim - Britons showed more enthusiasm than some other countries.

The findings suggest that terrorist plots against the UK, including the London bombings of July 7 2005, have hardened British attitudes towards Muslims. Osama Saeed of the Muslim Association of Britain blamed the findings on what he called "a vicious campaign" by the press against the Muslim community.

Most British respondents -52 per cent - expected a "major terrorist attack" in their country within a year. Even in Spain where the Basque extremist group Eta has recently abandoned a ceasefire, only 32 per cent predicted a big attack. The numbers fell to 30 per cent in the US and 15-18 per cent in France, Italy and Germany.

France emerged as the country most at ease with its Muslim population. The French were most likely to say they had Muslim friends, to accept if their child wanted to marry a Muslim, and to say Muslims in their country had received unjustified criticism and prejudice.

Patrick Weil, political scientist at the University of Paris 1 Sorbonne, said: "In France we are very good at cultural integration. We are very bad in fighting discrimination, especially in high-level jobs. In the UK it is the opposite."

In the US, which has proportionally fewer Muslim inhabitants than France, Britain or Germany, 21 per cent saw the presence of Muslims as a threat, while 20 per cent said Muslims had too much power.

Harris conducted an online poll between August 1 and 13 of 6,398 adults, broadly split among the six countries surveyed.

Brits may be suspicious of Muslims but their politicians are positively terrified of them.

“Osama Saeed of the Muslim Association of Britain blamed the findings on what he called “a vicious campaign” by the press against the Muslim community.”

So nothing to do with the bombings or fighting for AQ then?

Well, getting bombed will do that to folks. The UK was the last hit, who can blame them? I suspect there is a direct correlation between being bombed by muslims and the degree of trust. Just about 6 years later, Americans, despite thwarted attempts, are again becoming complacent. Watch a spike after the next attacks. Since the media downplays all the prevented attacks, the post-9/11 suspicions have faded, but not for long.

Also, the radicals in Britian (London) are pretty outspoken, agressive, and bold. Recent inside reporting on the mosques there would also give most people pause. Our media hasn’t reported similar incidents.

As long as the Muslim population remains around 1% of any given country they will be regarded as a peace-loving minority and not as a threat to anyone. In fact they may be featured in articles and films stereotyped for their colorful uniqueness.

Between 2% and 3% they begin to proselytize from other ethnic minorities and disaffected groups with major recruiting from the jails and among street gangs. [Europe, Australia, USA and Japan]

From 5% on they exercise an inordinate influence in proportion to their percentage of the population. You will find not only the introduction of halaal food (giving food prep jobs to Muslims), but growing pressure on the super-market chains to feature it on their shelves (along with threats for failure to comply).

South Africa’s Muslim population is 2%, but they control 35% of the businesses, a large percentage of the banks and have five Cabinet seats while Christians (77% of the population) have none.

From 10% you will notice growing belligerence in no-go lawless suburbs (ghettos), with car-burnings (a la France last October). After 20% expect hair-trigger rioting, jihadi militia formations, sporadic killings and terror bombings of Churches. [India, Mindanao (Philippines)]

At 40% you will find widespread massacres, chronic terror attacks and ongoing militia warfare. [Indonesia] From 60% you may expect unfettered persecution, sporadic ethnic cleansing (genocide), use of Shari Law as a weapon and Jizya confiscatory tax. [Sudan, Kosovo, Lebanon and Egypt]

After 80% expect State run ethnic cleansing and genocide. [Western Papua New Guinea, Iran, Biafra, Turkey and N. Nigeria]

100% will usher in the peace of “Dar-es-Salaam”- House of Peace – as in Saudi Arabia, Libya and Yemen.

Exactly. What you said. I was going to post something nearly identical until I read your post. Good for Britain for being suspicious; keep it up!

More suspicious than Americans?

Well ... we're still armed and we'll shoot the bastards ... suspicion is an element of fear.

Interesting analysis. It’s like arsenic in tap water. At lower levels like 5 parts per billion (ppb), the acceptable level, it’s not considered a problem, even drinkable. Slightly higher levels like 50 ppb mean a 1 in 50 risk of cancer. At 60 parts per million, a one-time dose is fatal.

I hate it when people say the Brits are smarter than us...

but in this case, they are.

Don’t think that the islamist cockroaches are beaten or asleep. They’re busy, busy, busy: planning, probing, gathering intelligence, putting out propaganda. The left, of course, calls this thinking paranoia but I suspect if Hillary or Obama become president, all the pieces will be in place and the bombing will start.
Seems logical to me from their point of view.

Britons are more suspicious of Muslims than Americans...

Why on earth would Britons be suspicious of Americans?
