Romney Can't Ignore Questions About Mormonism
RealClearPolitics ^ | 8/20/2007 | Mark Davis

Even though Mitt Romney can't seem to dislodge Rudy Giuliani atop the national GOP polls, and can't even draw as much poll support as Fred Thompson, who isn't even running yet, there is an understandable anticipatory buzz about him.

He may well be the eventual choice of his party if the Thompson phenomenon fizzles or if Giuliani supporters simply grow weary of navigating the obstacles posed by his past and his politics.

In an appearance in Texas last week, I saw Romney energize a crowd with just the kind of speech a GOP nominee should give-- strong and unapologetic on the war, upbeat and resolute about the future. This is a typical Romney performance, and it earns him speculation that he has nowhere to go but up.

This is wholly deserved. But the issue of his religion, which some say has been overplayed, has in fact not been addressed with nearly the thoroughness and honesty that will be necessary to satisfy some in the Republican voting base.

It has not been addressed well by the candidate, and it has not been handled honestly by pundits. Until it is, it lurks as a torpedo that could spell the doom of his promising candidacy.

OOOPS!! My computer cut off my reply to 231. ...the tough questions are still ahead of him ....

Why should those stupid questions be asked in the first place? If anyone wants to know about the ins and outs of Mormonism, start with the Book of Mormon, and take it fromthere -- call the Church, they'll be glad to give you a copy and answer any SINCERE questions you may have.

Your self-righteous altitude is reducing the oxygen to your brain perhaps. You have to be caught up in the cult of Mormonism to not be able to see the absurdities at the foundations of the cult. The founder was a liar, an adulterer, a fasle prophet, a rewriter of the Bible inserting fabricated prophesies of his coming ‘in these latter days.’ But you just stay out on that limb a bit longer. Your Mormon condescension and ridicule speaks volumes to conservative readers at FR. You are doing a great service to help prevent Mitt Romney from gaining the republican nomination. Carry on there ... denial is not a river in Egypt, BTW.

RE: #243

And by the way, short stack, I am not a Mormon, and Romney is not my choice for President -- at least not yet.

No Straw Man you wondered if they were running as national pastor. I am simply asking a question, what is your answer?

LOL...

Go look up the definition of "Straw Man" as it relates to debating. You clearly don't even know what it means.

...and I "wondered" nothing. Mitt is not running for national pastor. That's just one reason his religion is irrelevant.

You use the hypothetical Muslim candidate for the shock/fear value, when it has nothing at all to do with Mitt or Mormons in public office. Rather than debate the relevance of Mitt's religion, you drag Islam into the discussion.

Islam has an entirely different attitude toward and relationship with government than the LDS Church, and everyone knows it. The Muslim question just doesn't apply. Try and stay on-topic.

Come on, I have the book debate for dummies don’t insult my intelligence like that. I poked fun at you straw man idea to make the point. I agree that Islam is entirely different yet in some ways the same. No mormon’s aren’t out to kill infidels and take over the world that way. I have issues about mormonism from a biblical view. Saying that, I am not a romney supporter any way. You still haven’t answered the question, would you vote for a muslim? I have friends and clients that are muslim that don’t want to kill me, nor do they believe in the ideas of the islamofacist. Saying that, I would not vote for a muslim, what about you?

As I implied in my previous response, the Islamic religion has a completely different attitude toward government than Western religions do. They see no division between secular and religious authority, which is a basic tenet of our Constitutional government. For that reason, I would not vote for a Muslim.

Um, oh great one, point to a lie or be exposed for a false accuser. Love that adult phrasing you use by the way. Bwahahaha. I’ll pray for your safety.

Why does that matter?

By the way I feel differently than you on the division of secular and religious authority. All athority has been given by God to man and All athority has been given in heaven and earth to Jesus who in turn has given it to his church.

Just a question. I read your tagline and was wondering. I am a Christian and not ashamed to say it.

Yet, Jesus paid the required tribute (tax) to Caesar and proclaimed, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."

I'm not ashamed to be a Mormon, quite the opposite actually. But it didn't have anything to do with our discussion, so I was curious why you wanted to know.

Aw come on angel, you accuse me of lying so prove your accusation. And as to the prayers, too late tough guy I’ve already lifted you up to the Lord. Just think of it like that baptism for the dead Mormons like to perform.
